Mick, that Denon is great for the price, you should go for it if you haven't already. Never had a problem with vibration from a belt drive or direct drive turntable used in locations 5 feet away from people running down hallways on upper floors of any studio I've ever worked in.

How is belt drive more prone to pick up microphoning? I'm not sure I understand....

Industry Standard for you = Commercial equipmentin a radio studio. Mick is looking to use his turntable at home, not in a music studio I respect direct drive turntables and I think the Technics 1200 is a great unit, but like anything else there are better units out there that sound better but, on the flip side, won't last as long.

I'm not trying to sound argumentative, just trying to show both options JV.

I know you weren't being argumentative, Chris , I was honestly wondering why procurement of turntables for studios is direct drive.

I was trying to illustrate that the 'footfall' issue is near non-existent with the Technics that we use. It's also been my experience that belt driven home turntables tend to microphone more because of their design unless you're spending mad cash on one that has the housing and tonearm as seperate parts. Direct drive will also microphone, but in my 8 years using them at work 5 days a week, not as often as belt drive.

I think the Denon that Mick chose is great for his intended purpose. Just don't go putting a hamster on it and gradually making it go faster and faster till the little guy flies off.

Lots of good comments re: direct drive vs belt drive but in all fairness even though
you may not be considering this turntable understanding the way it works, how it accomplishes pure reproduction can be an education in and of itself. Not only that if your interested in this kind of technology it often becomes avaliable at a great price. It is Audiophile gear at it's very best. Whatever your choice it's a good thing to be informed. Check it out.

Alright that's cool! Sometimes my comments come off as snobby and I apologize for that. I have to remember I'm not having a conversation with someone in my room....you can't see my facial expressions

I have no idea what the scoop is on belt vs. direct. Growing up I always thought direct was the way to go. Then I started looking at these crazy turntables and all of them were belt drive. I have no idea! You would think direct drive would be a better option because the motor is directly connected to the plinth/platter, but there has to be a reason why these hi-fi geeks chose belt drive systems?

I have to tell ya though, I love vinyl. Cranking up GnR on the turntable is definitely a treat. Brings back the good 'ol days!

Mick may very well put a hamster on the thing and use it as a treadmill. He's only 15 (are you 16 now Mick?!) and certainly causes a lot of trouble around the house
