10miles over limit ticket vs drug dealing

My 17 years old daughter recently got a ticket (first one) for doing 30mph in a 20mph speed limit zone. She went to the court yesterday and the judge told her that she had to do a 10h community service as well as complete a safety driving class and then go back to court and may be considered for a PJC. Just in front of her there was this 17 years old boy with her mother who was convicted of drug dealing. The boy only got 10h of community service and that is it!!! What's up with that???

Was your daughter represented by an attorney? Seems a bit excessive. Was she speeding in a school/construction zone?

No she was not represented by an attorney and it was not a school zone nor construction. Again I am not arguing too much about what she got, I am arguing on the fact that the judge put drug dealing at the same level as a 10mph over speed limit ticket. Does not make any sense to me.

I actually feel sorry for this black boy as he will not learn from this...but my daughter certainely did. This boy will continue to go down the wrong
road in life...and his mother ....she did nothing to stop it...but sign his go to
jail card by letting this happen! My opinion anyway

Alpac, considering African American's would probably argue that they are usually the one's getting the short end of the legal stick. Maybe this is just one of those cases of the world trying to correct itself.

Imagine if it were the other way around and your daughter had been caught drug dealing and he had been caught speeding and the penalties were the same.

btw, I'm also not quite sure why his race was important in your post. It almost sounds as if your saying, a black boy can't learn from probation but your daughter can.

Now I don't think that was your intent. I think (or I hope) you were just trying to paint the scene for us. But you might want to be a bit more careful how you phrase things, they could easily be misinterpreted.

Absolutely not and I am sorry if I made this impression! The kid could have been white, Asiatic, Hispanic, German, French , whatever that would not change anything. My point is that this judgment did not do any good to neither of these two kids. As I said in my previous post the boy will not learn from this experience. To the contrary he will think that drug dealing is not that bad after all and this is unfortunate since later it may be too late for him to learn. And as far as my daughter is concerned, what do you think a 17 years old girl could retain from this experience? That she can deal drug and get the same punishment. When you are 17 you still have so much to learn.

Her sentence was tough because she was 17 at the time of the offense. Statistics have shown that more accidents and deaths are caused by young drivers especially speeding young drivers.

It could be argued that speeding teens are a danger to society while drug use is a personal crime if he was not using behind the wheel. That said I'm not one for relaxed drug laws and feel the drug dealer will be back in front of a judge while your 17 year daughter might not.
