I've heard of people losing things before, but this is crazy.

http://www.physorg.com/news101615681.html

AP) -- A five-acre glacial lake in Chile's southern Andes has disappeared - and scientists want to know why.
Park rangers at Bernardo O'Higgins National Park said they found a 100-feet-deep crater in late May were the lake had been in March. Several large pieces of ice that used to float atop the water also were spotted.

"The lake had simply disappeared," Juan Jose Romero, head of Chile's National Forest Service in the southernmost region of Magallanes, said Wednesday. "No one knows what happened."

A group of geologists and other experts will be sent to the area 1,250 miles southeast of Santiago in the next few days to investigate, Romero said.

One theory is the water disappeared through cracks in the lake bottom into underground fissures. But experts do not know why the cracks would have appeared because there have been no earthquakes reported in the area recently, Romero said.

A river that flowed out of the lake was reduced to a trickle.

As was discussed in Al Gore's movie last year, Lake Chad in Africa had the same thing happen. 40 years ago this lake was larger than any of the American Great Lakes, but as of 2004, it is completely gone.

Yeah, but this was over about 3 months...no 40 years...no 'global warming' here.

Big Oil and Haliburton stole it to take it to Iraq and bill the U.S. government.

The troops need drinking water, after all!

Would not surprise me one bit.

If they could put a meter on the air, the government would pass laws privatizing the air. Companies would then claim ownership of the air and charge you to breath. The government would then have welfare programs to pay for those who could not afford to pay for breathing air, and people like you would complain that your tax money is paying for lazy bums to breath. The conservative radio talk show hosts would complmain that our tax money is paying for illegal alliens to breath our air.

On the other hand, socialist countries would just allow everyone to breath the air. No ownership of the air, no tax money to pay for the air, no cost for the meters to measure the air, and no profit made from people breathing.

The capitalist economists would calculate that the air industry in the United States totals $200 billion, and of course would count that figure when they calculate our GDP and the size & growth of our economy.

Sorry for the thread drift. You make fun of my ideas, but you just don't realize that most of how our economy works is not much different than this kooky example. You are just used to it, so it doesn't appear to you as being wasteful and rediculous.

Wagner, please respond to above ^ post. kthx.

Honestly, I'm sure socialism solves everything. Why not let the government own everything. I'm sure the government will be perfectly honest and fair to everyone.

Yeah - socialism. What a way to run a country.

President Hugo Chavez's administration blames the food supply problems on unscrupulous speculators, but industry officials say government price controls that strangle profits are responsible.
...
Shortages have sporadically appeared with items from milk to coffee since early 2003, when Chavez began regulating prices for 400 basic products as a way to counter inflation and protect the poor.

Yet inflation has soared to an accumulated 78 percent in the last four years in an economy awash in petrodollars, and food prices have increased particularly swiftly, creating a widening discrepancy between official prices and the true cost of getting goods to market in Venezuela.

Let's have more of that. Of course, with all the tax dollars, when people are dying of starvation, at least they can die in a hospital for free.

Hey man, once again Utopia would be AWESOME! Of course, since the market tanked the cost to buy a lot in fantasy land has gone up

I'm pretty sure the majority of people in America are very happy to be here and would not trade it for the world. Why do you think we even have an immigration issue? Ah, Cuba, Venezuela and Russia don't have one...wonder why???
