I'm 18, and think that texting while driving is just plain dumb. I never answer any calls while I'm driving, and if I do, it's only when there's a passenger in my car to answer the phone call.

I can understand my elders doing it, because hey, it can be an important call for your business, or anything else (and if this is the case, use a hands free device). But there should be no reason, for a younger person to use the phone to call or text while driving, and odds are, 90% are worthless calls/texts anyways, to see what your friends are doing, and what not.

well I couldn't text while driving I would need my glasses for that. then I wouldn't be able to see the road.

I don't think texting is just for young people I see loads of oldies texting.

Speed Kills taking one to many risks.

I text whilst driving. I am 32. I can text without looking at the phone, this includes selecting that I want to type a text, typing it, and selecting who i want to send it to. there is the odd typo, but not many. I can send a text message to somebody without looking in the same way that I can type without looking. However, if I want to change my iDrive from FM radio to MP3, find the folder I want, and find the song I want, I cannot do this without looking. So - which is more dangerous, texting or iDrive...

So, who here speeds... or talks on a hands free phone whilst driving... or swaps CD or uses iDrive whilst driving... etc etc. Things need to be put in context and perspective, not everybody (especially "young people") need to stare at a mobile phone in order to send a message. For me, it is certainly no more dangerous - infact I would honestly say less dangerous - than using the iDrive which _does_ require my eyes to be taken off the road.

Well, show us the iDrive accident deaths and then they can be called 'comparable'.

I will as soon as some politician or organisation with a grant decides they want to make that "scapegoat of the week"... But seriously, because texting is something that anybody with a phone can do, it is always going to be more of a target than the small percentage of BMWs on the road.

Seriously though - what is more dangerous, A) being on a motorway on cruise control on a clear road in good weather in a new BMW that has been well built and maintaned, sending a text message without having to look at your phone, and being 10mph over the speed limit, or B) being on a twisty road at night in pouring rain and concentrating 100% on driving, in your 10 year old beat up car travelling to the legal speed limit.

There are SO many variances that cause crashes that it's often impossible to say "he crashed because he was sending a text message". That is just one factor, and in many cases it will not be the determining factor. Ie, if he had not been texting, he would have still had that crash.

I only text when safe to do so. I can send a text message just as easily (if not more so) than going in to iDrive to select an MP3 album and start a song playing.

I am not saying it's 100% safe 100% of the time. But it should not be stated that sending a text message is any more dangerous than anything else you may do when driving a car. Messing with your iDrive to find your favourite MP3, lighting a cigarette, having a drink of water, even taking your hand off the steering wheel to change gear can result in a crash if done at the wrong time.

Young people have better reactions than older people, old people are often complacent about driving (another word you could use is "experienced", but that isn't always a positive thing compared to young drivers who will often be paying attention a lot more than older people!). etc etc etc ... we could right a 100,000 word essay and just scratch the surface.

Driving safely or dangerously has SO much more to it than a blanket statement of "texting whilst driving will kill people".

Many vehicles have iDrive like controls, and I still haven't heard reports that it is an issue. How about we just drive when we are in a vehicle. If I had my way, I'd line the vehicle so that signals could not be received within them, thus..no cells/no texting....but that is just me.

If you feel comfortable with all of these superfluous anologies then suffice it to say I rest may case. Reasonable people would dissagree with your illogical reasoning particularly those with children who like others have refuse to ignore common sense and end up maimed or dead because they insist on being right. I suppose it's the age we live in, but whatever. For those who insist on ignoring the inevitable, i only hope their family's are spared the consequences of their bad decisions and they live long enough to look back and say "what a fool i was for doing the dumb crap i use to do".

So let it be written, so let it be done.

It's not about Text Messaging vs. cell phone vs iDrive. Nor is it about young vs old. It's about doing something distracting while driving compounded by a lack of driving experience and a sense of invincibility. That applies to everyone, other than the invincibility part which is usually attributed to the younger people.

Having said that, this was on the radio this morning:
Seniors safer drivers than the young, study says

A U.S. study released Wednesday found that drivers 65 and older may be more likely to cause an accident than adult drivers, which includes those as young as 25 and up to 64. But they are not nearly as dangerous on the road as young drivers
The study by Rand Corporation, a Washington think-tank, found that older drivers, who represent 15 per cent of all licensed drivers, cause only 7 per cent of accidents. Meanwhile, drivers under the age of 25 and representing 13 per cent of all licensed drivers cause 43 per cent of accidents.

I was actually supposed to be at that farmers market that same day. Thank God I changed my mind that morning.
