Black co-worker and good friend sends me racist joke
So I have known this guy for 7+ years now. He comes over all the time to play XBOX and Wii. He is also my real estate agent. This morning I get this email from him with a racist joke in it.  Don't know what to think really. I'll admit the joke was pretty funny but nothing I would feel comfortable forwading on. Thoughts?

Unfortunately, I find this happens rather often. Most people are only offended when it is their own kind that the joke is aimed at. Being Jewish, and having many Jewish friends who forward me their emails, I'd say about once a week there is something anti-Arab or anti-Muslim that is meant to be funny, but which most Arabs or Muslims would probably find offensive.
I don't find it to be a big deal. I think the world has gone way too far in being so PC. A joke is a joke. When people are not joking, that is when there is a problem.

Maybe he's just comfortable enough with you to look beyond the race thing. I'm a proud Black man and have close non Black friends that I joke around all the time even with race stuff. I think One will know if it's disrespectful based of tone of voice or the type of relationship you share. At the end I think we all have to be able to look beyond the ethics BS and just treat people for what they are. I would take as a positive he shared that joke with you.

Actually it was a black joke and he is black. What I found interesting though, is what would the reaction have been if I forwarded that to him?

I am white, funny thing I don't really see many jokes come across my email anymore. Especially not white jokes, which is kind of odd in and of itself, because we do a lot of stuff that one could laughed at. Just look at how we dance.
