Any Boxster drivers/fans/critics?

I have been an avid BMW driver since 1984. I love my X5 and plan on keeping it for some time.

But I have always been a fan of the Porsche Boxster from afar and am considering getting one (a black 2005) as a second car. I have never owned a Porsche and would appreciate input from fellow BMW drivers on the merits of the Boxster. I would probably drive it around 5K miles per year.

I live in San Diego so the weather is conducive to driving a convertible. The downside is the car would not be garaged. Therefore I have concerns regarding keeping the soft top in shape.

Thanks and looking forward to your responses.

I want one. Right now I have a 2004 SAAB 9-3 Convertible, and while it is fine for now, it is continually affected with electic gremlins and the paint is not in great shape for some odd reason. My buddy just picked up a few months ago a silver 2006 Boxster S, which is really nice. He said the normal version just didn't have enough punch, so he opted for an S. For me, the normal will be fine. So I was thinking in about a year I'd pick up a demo/slightly used '06/'07 Boxster, maybe. It's a great driving car, but I frequently drive the Saab into the city, where it will get beat up some, so I don't know. The Saab only has 13k mi on it.
I think if you try to keep it as dry as you can, and treat the softtop with cleaners and preservers it will be fine, but don't expect it to be in garage queen condition. I go to SD a lot, isn't there a Porsche dealer in Carlsbad?
Good luck

The boxter is far outperformed and out classed by an M/roadster or the Honda S2k both for less money then would be paid for the boxter...if you are looking for performance per dollar the boxter is lacking a bit...Also the Lotus Elise is in that price range as well...which is by far the best of the lot...if you can fit comfortably in one

+1 for the Porsche.

I had one until the warranty ran out. It was a fun car but I had tons of electrical problems and the ABS failed on several occasions. Porsche ended up flying someone out from Germany to splice in the end half of the wiring harness to cure the fault.

Nice thing is Porsche gave me a Boxster loaner but mine was a stick and the loaner was an automatic. It was in the shop for 2 1/2 months for the harness repair.

I'm sure mine was an exception but owning a few 911's in my day I've found they are a blast to drive for experienced drivers but maintenance nightmares.

Just make sure it is covered by Porsche and sell it right before the coverage expires and you should be good.

I had a 2002 and returned it when the lease was up, put on about 30k trouble free miles! Great fun, great autoX car, I wouldn't mind getting another one some day.

Once you get a mid-engine sports car, you will never want a front engine car again!

OK...We get to agree on something (Thank goodness for car topics).

Mid engine cars are very predictable and very forgiving. On twisty roads and auto X ing there is no better car than a mid engine design.

I don't know, my 350Z was the best handling, best performing car I've ever had. Keeping in mind I had some work done to it (260+hp to the wheels and 260+tq) but that thing handled like it was on rails. And that is compared to my 996 and E46 M3. The Z is one bad @ss ride. Heck, may want to check out the Z roadster for that matter (if you must have a drop top).
