In this market segment all the cars are going to be better than average, but they will all have their individual styles and stigmas. With a car like this you have to consider what image you want to reinforce about your self. In my mind the Boxter is the 'safe' choice. No one will think twice about a boxter: "Nice car" and people will move on. It's motoring without drawing too much attention to your self. The Z4 on the other hand is more of a statement. Some might argue that the Boxter is more of a gentleman's car rather than the yuppie pony-tail car that the Z4 is. You can attribute all the cars in the segment with these kinda attributes, but in the end all of this is superflous because ... ... get the car that transforms you the most into Homer Simpson confronted with a box of donuts That is how you make the choice - I suspect that is the boxter in your case And my views of the boxter: Good car, that could be better (no limited slip dif), that looks like it is confused: is it going backwards or forward? The biggest problem with the boxter? The 911 - porsche will never let it be better than the 911.

We just sold the +1's Boxster S a couple of months ago, as she wanted the new 3 convertible to carry all her golf clubs, buggy, etc. Guess what: there was more room in the Boxster's two boots than in the BMW with the roof down
(We bought the BMW off the catalogue, it hadn't been released in Australia at the time.)I really liked the Porsche, and am seriously considering getting one for myself now. The balance, comfort, style, performance and reliability of the S was great, and I've run the gamut of Lotus, HSV's, etc etc. IMHO, the Boxster S is what I want, even against a stock 911. My 2 cents worth |

Unless you really want a convertible, take a look (drive) a cayman first. Sure it cost a bit more but i drove both and they are totally different beasts. In the end, Cayman came on top by a mile and im still really happy with my Cayman. And even if you want a convertible, take a look at a SLK 55. I had a slk55 before and i think thats a much more enjoyable car then the boxster. Sure the handling isn't as good as the Porsche, but i don't go track racing everyday and the roar from the v8 amg was just unbeatable.

Related, but somewhat off topic...
I am so waiting for us to become empty nesters (1 down, 2 more to kick out of the house) so I can buy a 2-seater that I can tear apart, spread car parts all over the house to piss off my wife, and build a dual use street/track car. Ranking of my choices thus far with a budget of around $20K: '89-'93 Porsche 964 '01-'04 Porsche Boxster S '99-'02 BMW M coupe '02-'04 Honda S2000 '03 Nissan 350z |

I'll say it again, take a 350Z for a test drive.
