What is your MBP in for? I was thinking of getting one to replace my iBook in a few months.

If you need a pc just for a few months, who cares what it is, just get the cheapest model from a reputable company. That means probably not Acer.

well my MacBook Pro is only 7 months old now. 8 weeks ago it started to make this buzzing sound under the keyboard to the left hand side. At the same time it would freeze up while using the dam thing and on top of all that it would switch of when the dam thing felt like it no warning.

So on the phone to Apple. at first the guy just went on and on about extending my warranty "are you mad I said" I just want to get it fixed it is only 5 months old maybe later I will think about your warranty but at the moment it is still under the guarantee.

I was told it would have to go to one of their repairers. Which is in Glasgow about a 40 min drive from my place.

Picked the Laptop up about 10 days later 2 of the 2 faults would appear to be fixed. Although they told me they couldn't find any faults

However fault no 3 still there switching off whenever. So back on the phone to Apple asking for a replacement but their not playing ball at all they now want me to take it to another repairer who I have been told are a total nightmare but a friend on mine had a terrible time with Scotsys his Apple came back from them damaged. So I'm not happy.

I have heard some horror stories about Acer service from my friends in Europe. I would never recommend anything Sony makes in the PC market. It's overpriced for what you get and unreliable.

So I would go with the Toshiba if I were you. Their service and reliability is generally good.

Oh, and there's an HP. Generally, okay but a friend had his go out during lightning storm one month after the warranty expired and HP wanted more than it was worth to fix it

Toshiba been a bit unlucky for me in the past few years I had 2 of them and had problems.

In the past 8 years

I have had a Compact with no problems a Sony no problems 2 Toshiba with problems and 1 Apple with problems. I looking for something up to date super fast and that stays super fast.

I recommend that you look for:

- Core 2 Duo
- Hybrid hard drive (one that has flash along with the regular drive, may not be in this price range)
- 2 GB RAM (and expandable to 4 GB, if possible)

What do you use it for? (are graphics important, gaming, etc.)

Cool Apple and their tech support

With Apple the key is to be persistent and build up a long set of case notes to help show your determination. Everytime any type of call is made they have to log it. Numerous times I spoke to people saying they'd never seen a case-file soo long.Generally, they have a three strikes rule before offering a full replacement. My laptop had issues with shorting around the battery terminals which they didn't seem to consider much of a safety issue despite its repeatedness. Plus the local Authorised shop (not truly apple) wasn't 100% helpful in presenting my case.Eventually however I ended up with a brand new machine through determination.Suggest asking for a Senion Specialist and if they won't then email your complaint and case number to Karine Aillan ([email protected]). Failing her then I've heard an email to one of many PAs [email protected] speeds things up. Check Consumerist website for more details.
