Anyone who assumes a 'breed' is bad is a complete and total moron. Enough said. Most likely couldn't pick out an American Pit Bull Terrier from a Strattfordshire Terrier or an American Bulldog. Vinuneuro is 100% correct. The topic of "Pit Bulls" has been covered here before with the same bias non-sense as is being discussed now. All dogs can attack you, all dogs can hurt you, dogs are ANIMALS stop pushing human values on them as if the dog really 'likes' you, you are simply the 'Alpha' member of it's pack.

Nearly every single solitary article on a 'bad Pit Bull' can be directly tracked back to the owner.

ALL dogs are pack animals...even goofy Chihuahuas like Paris Hilton has. Just because you put it in a shirt didn't make it "not an animal".

From 1979-1998, there were 164 attacks/deaths from pure pit bulls (plus check the chart, Pit Bull 'types' of dogs...great so any bull terrier, that doesn't alter a stat much). Now how many people were murdered in that same time span? Yup, humans are a far more dangerous breed, let's outlaw them

Point Well Taken and I know your very passionate about them and I respect that however I feel they have been proven to be a dangerous breed, they are constantly ranked as the most dangerous dog, constantly, I hear about Pit Bull attacks all the time, and I for one refuse to socialize my dog with them because I feel their unsafe menaces in a dog run, I would even go as far to say as that certain breed in theory being banned from a dog run would most likely create a much safer environment

Finally, your little jab at Chihiahuas obviously made at me a hypocritical at best, yes my dog can attack but my dog car hardly do as much damage as your Pit Bull

Doesn't matter, still a dog attack. Now if you wanted to say "dogs that are strong should be handled differently" I would be in FULL agreement. I believe anyone owning an animal (yes animal) that is over 30lbs should have to pass a qualification first. However, the majority of dog attacks that are, one way or another, passed off as APBT attacks are not from the type of people you would socialize with (needless to say put your animal around).

Dogs I would list of capable of inflicting severe harm (short version):

APBT
American and English Bull dogs
Rotts
Doberman
Labradors
Retrievers
Chows
Husky
St. Bernard
Any Mastiff

People love to make it a clean cut case, and just like human society, it isn't.

IMO, no dog (NONE) should be allowed to roam free without a leash EVER. It is an animal and people seem to assume "oh I know my dog, it's fine".

Just to let you know how I treat my dog:
- never is off a leash outside, ever.
- never has a collar off (inside or out)
- responds to several verbal commands to put herself in specific areas of the house
- is NEVER allowed unattended around any visitor in the house.
- is not allowed around other dogs without an insane amount of supervision (and again, on a leash).

I doubt most dog owners, of any dog, take such stringent precautions. I am routinely told that I should take it easier on her by visitors, I don't. You can't treat an animal as though it has human characteristics, it doesn't. It is a pack animal and will always check to see who is the Alpha in the relationship.

I would hazard to say the odds of you getting shot or hit by a car are better then an attack by any dog 'deemed dangerous' (and there are over 40M dogs in the US). I feel the same way on this topic that I do about gun control. Kid gets your gun and kills someone, you're responsible just as much as the kid.

Pit Bulls along with a number of other breeds have now been officially classified as Dangerous Breeds in the UK under a law we have had since 1991. The specific breeds are:

The act bans the breeding and sale or exchange of four kinds of dog - pit bull terriers, Japanese Tosas, the Dogo Argentinos, and the Fila Brasileiros. Cross-breeds of those dogs are also covered by the law.

Any other dogs "appearing... to be bred for fighting or to have the characteristics of a type bred for that purpose" are also banned.

Under the act, a dog classed as being "dangerously out of control in a public place" can be destroyed. The owner can be fined up to $10,000 and imprisoned for up to six months.

We had a number of serious incidents involving this type of dog a few years ago, which were probably a small minority relevant to the number of animals, but nevertheless forced the UK Government to take drastic action.

There is a high profile court case going on at present where a grandmother has been charged with causing the death of her 5 yr old granddaughter by gross negligence after allowing a pit bull into the house.

Any dog that attacks any one should be put down, immediately. I feel the same way about the Michael Vick dogs which apparently didn't get put down (they need to all be killed).

As for the link that was just posted, lets pick out some key points aside from the following 'attack' (more piss poor human behavior):

Quote:
Ms Simpson ignored a family agreement banning the dog from the house, Liverpool Crown Court was told.

"You may have sympathy for the defendant because, as a grandmother, she has lost a loved granddaughter and accepts some responsibility for that death."
Excuse me, the grandmother is FULLY responsible for the girls attack, she brought the dog and left it there with the girl. The dog should be killed, and she should be jailed.

Mmmhmmm. GS bit my neighbors kid and GS tried to bite me. My neighbor has lived next to me for 3 years, never 'attacked' by my Pit Bull. Sorry to be so adamant about this but these types of discussions usually have roots in zero hands on experience and 2, 3rd or 4th person commentary.

But at least give English bullies their own line and not put American and English bulldogs

I don't know why, it just burns me to no end when people confuse english for american or lump them all together because it's a "bulldog". Not saying you were doing that, just making a generalized statement.

Same thing when people lump Stratts and APBT's as the same dog. If a person couldn't tell an American Bull from an English Bull...they are loco.
