Actually the Visual Voicemail is based on the SIM card that comes with the iphone. At least that is what I have read. I unlocked my iphone to use it with my corporate at&t account. If you don't unlock it you are not only stuck with att but you have to use their apple specific accounts. That is how apple gets paid from att, they get a cut of all apple/att accounts. Visual voicemail looks cool but I'd rather use my existing account.

There is no unlocked phone even when you buy from Apple direct. Another benefit of unlocking is say when you want a new phone, get it FREE from ATT or TMobile but the fine print is they extend your contract. I don't WANT another two year contract from any one when I am one year or almost two into a contract.

I just bought another iPhone for my wife (who is on TMobile). I could have gone for a new TMobile phone for free but then they would have extended the contract another 2 years (no contract right now). So basically I paid $199 for the 4Gb (plus $100 Steve Jobs credit which is out today). Not a bad deal. Time to unlock and give it as a surprise gift to the CEO.

Yes, but AT&T has a visual voicemail server that sends out the messages to your phone like an email server. If you were to use the iPhone with T-Mobile, it would not work properly. The people who did the unlocking software realized this, so they intentionally disabled visual voicemail and enabled regular voicemail as a workaround.

Good point to bring-up but ultimately it's each individuals preference that matters.

Unlocking the phone is your choice so no need to do it if it doesn't provide value to you...

It was a retorical response to rickp who made the statement "You can buy the Iphone unlock if you buy direct from Apple and not AT&T." And believe me i understand the benefits of haveing an unlocked phone. In the past i had to explain those benefits to cell providers myself.

What your telling me is your buying the iPhone from Apple without the AT&T package unlocking it and using it with T-Mobile. That's fine. I'm just saying at this point because of all of the downsides to unlocking the phone, i don't see the benefit. Add to that using it with T-Mobile at least for me dosen't make it appealing either.

In your defense though AT&T isn't getting great reviews in some areas either. I guess that's why at this point i'm still with Verizon. I use to be with Nextel but they refused to give me a bargin on a new phone so I jumped ship.

In any event I hope it works for you.

Plain and simple....if your on t-mobile contract and you want an iphone, you need it unlocked....That is the main benifit.
