hey gresch, sorry to bring this thread back to life but how do you like the "live view" feature on the 40D? do you use it?

I never use it. i have a g7 if i want to shoot that way, and I rarely tether the camera to my computer. The few times I played with it, it was a bit cumbersome, but if I used it more I'ld probably get the hang of it.

From reading the photography web sites, I see that some people use it, but personally I just don't get why Canon put it on there, if people wnat a P&S, they should buy a P&S not a $1500 DSLR... but that's just my opinion based on how i shoot, YMMV

Hey Gresch,

I'm thinking about an update too. I use the 10D as my digital workhorse and a Hasselblad for when I'm shooting fashion type stuff.

My question for you is, it would seem with the L lenses and the enthusiasm that you share for photography, etc. Why did you opt not to go with the 5D instead? That's what I'm thinking about doing..
Yes, it's more expensive, 2x the price, but it's also a full frame image and is a bigger/better workhorse. (again, if your carrying two camera's with a 70-200 is L lens, your pretty serious.)

Is it because of the onboard flash ? I actually hate onboard flashes, I am trying a new technique of lighting called, strobist:
www.strobist.com

It's a relatively inexpensive way to get your flash off camera and give a much more dynamic image..

Here is some of my work: (sorry about the poor quality scans. Most of my work is still shot on film and my portfolio lives on paper, not so much on digital.)

(shot with 10D)

B-line,

It was a couple of reasons:

The 5D has 3FPS, while the 40D has 6.5, I shoot more action stuff than landscapes/portrait.

Cost was a factor too, I'm just a hobbyist and didn't see the need for a $2800 body I used the extra money on more L lenses lol (100-400L is next).

Re: flash, the onboard flash wasn't really a decision point either as I have a 550ex and 580ex, and a couple of slaves that I could have used with a 5D. It is handy to have an onboard though for fill flash. (Having to carry around an add-on flash and keep the batteries/battery pack charged is a hassle sometiems too)

Nice shots btw-

Good to see some folks are into picture taking. I still have a Canon A-1. Yeah I know by today's standards it's and old process but i still find that it takes some great photos even now. But loading the film then off to get it processed has been trumped by digital convienence. I guess you could say lazy is what i am.

Thanks Gresch and Barry,

Hope you don't mind that I hijacked the thread with part of my port. I'd be happy to edit it down if you like. (Or I can add some more "provocative" shots, lol..)

Gresch, I'm sort of torn right now. I need another body in addition to my 10D and am struggling between the 5D and the 40D. I like the full frame of the 5D for 35mm ratios, but I also like the 40D for the speed of shooting at the race track.

Hey Seth, nice photos. I was facing the same decision, 5D or 40D. I went for the 40D mostly because of price point. I would love to have a full frame camera at some point. But it being just a hobby, I could not justify the expense. I have been happy with my decision.

Barry, I still have my Canon A-1 too!

Well done pics, S!

I realize the constrictions putting them up here on the board,
but well done and, great subjects, lol!

I am fairly envious of you and G, et al, with you biggo cams,
digital-wise.

Ya'll got some good eye, imo.
