Canon 40D

Just picked up a new Canon 40D today, amazing camera.

I still have my 10D but this 40 is a huge upgrade.

startup time is almost instantaneous.
the lcd is huge
viewfinder is significantly brighter and bigger
the body is partially weather sealed
onboard flash is higher on the body so wide angle and telephoto lenses don't get in the way and vignette anymore
autofocus is much faster and there are more af points
ai servo works much better

and the picture quality is just tremendous. One of my main gripes about the 10D was that even if I cranked up the in camera settings, i still had to photoshop every picture, and when you're taking 300-400 pictures at a time sometimes, the photoshopping effort took all the fun out of the pictures. With the 40D you can leave every neutral and photoshop yourself, or you can use the in-camera settings now and no photoshopping required...

if you're looking for a new DSLR, i give the 40D a big

i know, this thread is worthless without pics but i just got it tonight so i'll post some over the weekend...

will do, with pleasure.

there are so many new features on this camera compared to my 10D, i'm actually going to have to *GASP ..... RTFM.

And I hate reading manuals. I guess I have some reading material for the commute for the next couple of days.

I paid $995 for a 3 mega pixel Sony digi camera in early 2000. Now you can have much better tech digicams for little over $200. And DSLRs are little over $1000. I will buy a DSLR one day.

i bought it at www.jr.com got it for $1299 no tax and cheap shipping (they're extremely reputable, been buying electronics from them for over 20 years)
b&h has them in stock for $1299 too.

i got the new grip (Bg-e2n) from 17th st photo (www.17photo.com) because they had it for only $20 more than the bg-e2, but b&h and other places were selling them for well over $200)

i also ordered 2 4GB cf cards from amazon because they have the sandisk extreme iii's on sale for $63.95 each(at least they did the other day.)

congrats on the purchase. I'm not skilled enough for a dSLR. A compact point and shoot with manual controls is all I can do

I have been thinking about upgrading too. Any thoughts of the 30D vs. the 40D? Price difference is about $300.
