Class-action lawsuit: Canadian vs US car prices

If this gets some results then woo-hoo!

Consumer groups welcome car price lawsuit

Consumer advocates are applauding the launch of a class-action lawsuit that is seeking more than $2-billion in damages from major auto-makers and dealers for allegedly conspiring to fix car prices 25 per cent to 35 per cent higher in Canada than in the United States.

“If there has been a conspiracy, it would be a righteous cause for a class-action lawsuit,” said Bruce Cran, president of the Consumers Association of Canada.

“This. . .has been going on for two years as the Canadian dollar has been rising to its present point, and I've got hundreds and hundreds of e-mails from people giving me the details of their exploits into the car market,” he said when reached by telephone Wednesday in Vancouver.

I am in the 'be careful what you wish for' club. Best quote from the article:

Quote:
Auto industry analyst Dennis DesRosiers warned that Canadian car buyers should be careful what they wish for because they might get it if the suit succeeds.

For nine of the past 11 years, Canadians have enjoyed a price advantage of $5,000 to $8,000 versus Americans and a legal precedent linking prices in the two countries would mean that when the dollar falls back, consumers in this country will face higher prices, said Mr. DesRosiers, president of DesRosiers Automotive Consultants Inc. in Richmond Hill, Ont.
There are ups, and downs. I looked at Porsche's US/Canadian price differentials, and decided not to further consider a Porsche a few years back. IMO that is the most effective control, voting with your feet as you walk or run away from a deal. Porsche isn't responding to the lawsuit, they are responding to dropping sales.
