Thanks all. It is a 2001 Carrera (not 4 or S) and a (cab) convertible. Here is the link:

The thing that bugs me is that over the last 6 years, there has been only one oil change. comments?

the oil probably isn't the problem, but i'ld be worried about the filter.... oil should be changed at least once a year regardless of mileage imho.

Synthetic or not, oil sitting for 6 years is not good. Sounds like you should be passing this one for various reasons. Good luck in your search!

I think that Vin, while having the best of intentions for you purchase, is making you over worry. I'm not saying that sitting oil is the best thing for the car but in all reality, it probably makes little to no difference.
If you buy it, you can do an immediate oil change, filter and then go give it an Italian tune up..
I think Porsche only recommends oil changes at 15,000 miles and they know that a lot of their cars will sit as garage queens. If it were a big problem, Porsche would not doubt, suggest that owners change the oil and filter at timed frequencies rather than mileage benchmarks.
My point is, the sky is "not" falling on this car. A lack of oil changes is pretty normal for most owners who follow suggested maintainence guidelines.

But I ask again, is the color, combo, options, EXACTLY what you want. Do you want the wood trim? It's not my personal favorite, but everyone has different tastes.
Also, if you go on Rennlist, I'm sure you can find someone who will help you and look at the car with you. Make sure to get a Private Purchase Inspection.

Btw, it does look like a very nice car though.. If you really love it, go for it.

Thanks all.

I do love the color combo and the car does indeed feel and looks real nice. I am going to try and see if the owner can budge in her price. Last I talked, the owner wanted 43K at the minimum. That is nowhere near the KBB which says 39K-40K for a condition like this. Also the CEO has to yet check it out and besides for all I know the car might be gone by now.

Worse comes to worse I keep looking.

Ditto on the PPI. I'd probably go one more step and send oil samples to Blackstone. They post the results up in a webpage, so the feedback is pretty quick.

You would be buying a model known for RMS and bearing issues as mentioned, but you wouldn't be protected by a warranty. The low mileage is certainly attractive, and perhaps you'll never see any issues if you keep it as a garagae queen. But if you plan on using it as a daily driver and potentially put a lot of miles on it, you have to take the engine issues into consideration.

I've been looking at Porsches as well as other marques, looking for that one last keeper/project car since I'm retiring pretty soon. The budget is in the mid-30K range. The 993 is sitting higher on the list than a 996, largely because of those aforementioned issues.

Mickey,

you're looking at high 30's. Buyer beware though, larger pecentage of the 01's had RMS issues which means new motors. I suggest 02 or later.
Why does RMS problem equal new engine? It's not like the seal is going to pop out and the rotating assembly seizes. At the worst it means, teh clutch needs to be replaced along with the seal.

For a car supposed to be that nice, why would you chance anything when there are so many for sale out there? How an engine is treated early in it's life has tremendous consequences later on. Any abuse is compunded the earlier it's done. And since it is extremely low mileage, that also makes any existing seal problem worse. That's what I meant by various reasons to pass this car.
