Unless you want a Mac, IMO Dell should be your first choice:

14.1" Dell Inspiron 1420
15.4" Dell Inspiron 1520/1521
17" Dell Inspiron 1720

Alternative are Toshiba Satellite m205 if you want inexpensive or Toshiba Satellite U305 if you want lightweight.

That being said, I really like my (IBM) Lenovo ThinkPad Z61t that is my work laptop. The widescreen is great.

I leave my Toshiba Satellite on all day and all night and I've not had one single issue. It just sits there plugged in next to my desktop for the occasional task. I should provably turn it off since I hardly use the thing...But it is there when I need it already fired up.

I leave all my computers on 24/7

IBM/Lenovo for Sure.

I'm on my 3rd one (X60s)

tough as nails; reliable. Use it 14-hours /day; worldwide travel; 7-hr battery; titanium finish, anti-shock protection system for HDD. Nothing beats it.

Another vote for IBM/Lenovo. T series, the X are more expensive.

We have over 3000 of them at work, T42/T43/T60, and aren't planning on switching. I just bought one for my daughter in university, as we get corporate pricing for home purchases.
