Replica vs. OEM - cost vs. marketability question
I'll probably be keeping the X for another 2 ---maybe 3 years. Got my cashflow focused on some other bigger and better things. Will probably add a *bmw diesel* to the collection in '08 if anything is enticing. In the market on buying 20" wheel - winter setup. Only used probably 2.5-3 months out of the year. Wheels cost for comparison #'s. OEM- around $2400 average Replica - same size & style - $700 shipped to my door The replicas is only 30% the cost of a OEM wheel in same size/style. Replica, probably slightly heavier and finish is not as nice paintwise. Don't mind buying OEM and when it's time to sell, there is a *market* for people who really do care about OEM wheels and don't WANT REPLICAS at all. Replicas serve a market from a function & cost standpoint, and OEM's serve another as well.... So let's say in 2009 or 2010, I decided to flip the OEM rims....Will there actually be a *Market* for someone to pay a fair price for a OEM wheel on a E53 platform. I think I just answered my own question after typing this whole spiel out.......

OEM and Replica to Joe Blow on the street will look IDENTICAL. In fact, unless you tell a person that they are replicas, they would have to measure the roundel or look for possible BWM insignias. The wheels look that good. IMO, I would almost always by reps over OEM ,unless the deal was insane, on a X5. It would be different on a M3 or something performance oriented where wait does make a difference.
The only thing to makes sure of replicas is that they have a structural warranty. The X is very heavy and 'cheap' replicas will bend under the weight over time.

Read a old post of yours Wagner on replicas.
Probably will go with W&C 87. I suspect they all come out of the same *factory* just different distributors of the same product....... Damm winter setup has got me see sawing all over the place

my only wonderment is why 20s for "winter"? Why not 20s you love for non-winter and 19s or, 18s for those couple-three months? Otoh, not knowing where you live or where you might wander to in the winter, maybe rent a weekend Jeep or... jes' wondering out loud. 20s with snows for "winter", replacing wheels, part-time, seems odd. But WTFDIK, lol!

Ran 18"s. Most of the roads I drive are paved but slushy if/when it snows. Fellow Brooklynite here. Last year, I did not even need to use the plower once. I do head out to the mtns when it snows but if I do...I'm usually on a plan to CO where a buddy of mine lives down in Steamboat Springs. It started with a new summer setup and then the *itch* rolled over to a new winter setup as well...

Hard to know, as even the weather Xperts bs and guess, but not knowing your day to day driving situ, but "knowing" Brooklyn and DaCity fairly well, I would think you could almost skip the winter tars. Finding 20s, in winter tread, will cost and...the mount/unmount for the summer switcheroo will be hell on the rims unless you have a dainty fingered Houdini for a tire guy, imo. I hope knives/utensils and ingredients shopping isn't this obsessive for you,  .GL,mD

Just curious, are there different grades of replicas?
How do you know if your getting a quality wheel?

If you pull up various past threads, you will almost always hear the *bad* experience voice out more than a positive one. This is natural as a consumer. However, all the replica styles offered by different retailers IMO are all coming out of the same factory ~depending~on the replica style , and are just sold be different retailers. So just purchase from a reputable retailer, review their purchase policy and if you're comfortable with their purchase policy, then order it. After ordering, obviously bring your wheel to a trusted shop to check trueness, balance, etc. Do a thorough inspection of the physical appearance of the wheel, etc --- Basically do your own due diligence. There was a couple of negative reviews of a particular retailer on this site, but I ordered from them anyhow as they had a decent price on the wheels.
