Ideas on Alaskan Cruise?

I'm trying to help plan an Alaskan Cruise for my grandparents and relatives, and I don't really know where to start. I've never planned cruises, but I'm sure some of y'all have some experiences so perhaps you could help. (By the way, I'm not going to be actually attending the cruise)

They're looking to do a 7-day cruise that leaves from Vancouver sometime in May. They're all of the older set (6 people, ages from 47-70)and want a good quality cruise. Any reputable cruise lines that I could search up? I did a forum search and found positive comments on Holland America and Norwegian Cruise lines. Am I missing any?

Holland America has tons of routes and different ships. Have any of you had personal experience with any one of these?

Any thoughts or comments greatly appreciated.

E61Silver is an unknown quantity at this point
We have friends that have taken many Holland American Line trips and they seemed to like it. They are owned by Carnival.

Sorry but thats about all I know.

I think that my parents did a bus tour as well, I listed a link below but not sure if it is the right company:

I haven't been to Alaska but the link i provided shows Holland America and Princess line as the one and 2 shipboard links. Princess lines sails out of SFO and both princess and Holland America have had good reports.

Since he did say he didn't know where to start I thought providing the links would be at least some direction. He also said "Any reputable cruise lines that I could search up"?

So It was not a hap hazard google search or some sort of effort on my part to ignore his request. I did what i do when i want specific information in the hope that he could at least get some information on cruise lines headed to Alaska.

Both the lines you mention are reputable and I'm sure they'd enjoy either one. Have they cruised before? If so, you may want to know if they prefer shore excursions? This answer may help narrow your search. Are they all of good health where they would be willing to do more 'active' excursions or of mild health where they would likely need to 'ride and watch'? Again, this may help direct the types of things you would/not plan for them.

Not too long ago 4 generations of my family took a cruise and it was quite difficult for us to find activities we would all do together (for some reason what a 98 year old want's/willing to do doesn't match what an 15 year old wants to do). Since they are not too far apart in age, you may have a 'easy' time planning. My family loves to cruise and with all the activities both on and off the ship, I'm sure you'll plan a great trip for them.

No, they haven't cruised before. Milder activities would probably be better; grandma does have a bad knee and I believe my dad would be the youngest of the group. THey definately prefer something more refined and upscale (without breaking the bank). My grandma does own a jewelry store, and that side of the family likes things a bit more comfortable. Little kids running around and wild parties are not preferred.

There's a lot of routes and tour options available, and I'm unfamiliar with all of them. They did mention there is no need to go around glaciers and breaking massive ice chunks, but beyond that, there isn't a set parameter they requested.

I just took my wife and kids on a Royal Caribbean Alaska cruise last Aug. We did a 5 day land tour before the cruise, and then a 7 day ship cruise from Anchorage (Seward) to Vancouver. I would highly recommend doing some sort of inland tour to really see Alaska, but this depends on your time and budget. We got to take a private traincar to Denali Natl. Park (we saw grizzly bears, caribou, etc.) and it was all handled by the cuiseline. It can be a little strenuous since some walking is involved, but it all depends on what you choose to do. As for the ship, it was the best cruise we have ever taken. The ship was the Radiance of the Seas. You stop in several ports and get to see Glacier Bay too. There are a lot of cruises to choose from, and each line is a little different with their routes, etc. Picking a ship can be confusing, but they are all pretty good. Take note that the weather can vary from warm inland, to cold and rainy at sea and along the coastal ports that time of year.

My in-laws like cruising. They are retired and fit in the age group specified - their number one advice when asked is to go with a smaller more luxurios line - dont do Carnival or Royal Caribbean if it can be avoided. They have many reasons for being picky, like having better service, a nice quiet place to have dinner and better rooms, but more than anything they like that there are less kids running arround

A few years ago my wife and I went on our first cruise, going to the Yucotan peninsula on a Royal Caribbean boat and I must say it was pretty close to our vision of hell - but my wife was the maid of honor at a friends wedding so we really couldn't get out of it. From our experience on that cruise I highly recommend one that does not have you eating dinner together with the rest of the 2000 people on the ship. I can think of many horrible things I would rather do than to go through that again.

But alas ... I rant ... long story short: Make sure you get a cruise that pampers to the lifestyle of the people who will be going.
