In my view part of what made the show worth while for me this year was the absence of so much Rap. What little there was was tolerable.

I haven't watched it in many moons but there were some nice moments last night Rhapsody in blue twin piano number for one.

Though Tina Turner had put on a bit of weight she did her thing in fine fashion. Hard to believe she's been retired for almost seven years.
Don't know if it's true but it was mentioned that Beyoncé was wore out but Tina didn't brake a sweat. Girlfriend is a 67 year old bomb shell..

Sad to see Jerry Lee Lewis not able to perform like he use to. But it was decent that he was given the chance to remind us all of his contribution.

The return of the Morris Day and the "Time" That was fun.......

It was nice to see Aretha had lost some weight but she has a long road ahead of her. I wish her well on her quest. It would be difficult to take if we lost her.

Herbie Hancock's award for best contemporary Jazz album was a highlight for me. Being a avid jazz listener i was happy to see jazz get the recognition it deserves. Can you believe this guy is 67 years old??? http://www.freep.com/apps/pbcs.dll/a...160007/0/ENT04

"It's been 43 years since the first and only time that a jazz artist got an album of the year award," he said, referring to 1964's "Getz/Gilberto," an album released by the American saxophonist Stan Getz and Brazilian guitarist Joao Gilberto.

Well; there were other highlights to make a note of with the second pass. The wife hasn't seen it so we'll check it out later.
Kanye took Vince Gill's comment as a good sport.

The Grammy's have never been a platform for Rap music.

Rhapsody in Blue was by far the best musical piece of the night.

Been a fan of Herbie Hancock since listening to my dads LP of Herbie's "Headhunter"

The Time.... timeless, and apparantely ageless. Bring back the Minneapolis sound!

For goodness sakes, Aretha... push back from the table!

Winehouse did a drunk performance via satellite and cleaned house. I think she got like 5 or something.

I love it that someone other than the usual overplayed garbage walked with top honors!

Rap Rules Among the Grammy Award Nominations

By NEIL STRAUSS
Published: December 5, 2003

Rap, which was added as a Grammy category only in the late 1980's, seems to have taken over the ceremony. Four of the five songs nominated for record of the year (an award given to a single) featured rappers. The only exception was ''Clocks'' by Coldplay, which is competing with ''Lose Yourself'' by Eminem, ''Hey Ya!'' by OutKast, ''Crazy in Love'' by Beyoncé with Jay-Z, and ''Where Is the Love'' by the Black Eyed Peas and Justin Timberlake.

Herbie Hancock is a LEGEND. It is about time he was properly recognized.

Uh, I was watching the Grammy's... And I stand by my statement that the Grammy's have not been a platform for Rap music. Further, it was slow to accept Rap as a category of popular music. Had you said the American Music Awards, I would most certainly agree with you.

I agree that 2003 was a hot year for rap-inspired music. But out of the artist you mentioned above, only Eminem's "Loose Yourself" was a rap song in its traditional sense. (One could make the same argument for "Hey Ya!") However, as you earlier stated, the Grammy's did not acknowledge rap until the late 1980's. This is more than a decade after "Rappers Delight" became a mainstream hit. When the Grammy's finally recognized rap as a category, it was relegated to the unaired awards ceremony. It was not until DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince won the award for "Parents Just Don't Understand" in 1989 that the presentation of this award was televised.

And THAT was the darkest day in EMI's history... so embarrassing to be working there when that happened.

one of the A&R guys was overheard at the Grammy's after party that year saying that he was embarrassed to have milli vanilli on the label and someone from Billboard overheard him and it made the front page, double embarrassing. And he was fired. No matter how embarrassing it was, the album sold and the label made money, you can't trash an artist who is selling, have it wind up on the front page of billboard and keep your job No matter how much everyone in the company agreed with you LOL!

The Grammy's are a platform for all kinds of music. If Country is the popular then the Grammy's become a platform for country. If R&B happens to be hot the Grammy's becomes a platform for R&B. If hard rock catches on the the Grammy's becomes a platform for hard rock. The same is true for Rap. It too became a genre exposed on the grammy's. Whatever is popular at the time finds it self exposed on the platform we call the the grammy's.

In the case of Rap many people quit watching the grammy's for exactly that reason TO MUCH RAP....

The little kid that sang "Let it be" was excellent.

BTW, "that little kid" is Chris Brown, a teen pop/hip-hop sensation.
