I have always had wood stoves, which have heated our whole house, until we moved into a "cookie cutter" with a gas FP. it does throw a suprising amount of heat, and last winter probably saved our pipes during a long power outage. Even wood burning FP's (my PREFERENCE, if I could tear our gas POS out, I would replace with wood in a second) cause no smoke in your house if you have installed it correctly and with a chimney. The only thing I like about the gas is that I haven't chopped, carried and / or stacked wood in the last 5 years |

Based on the comments so far it sounds like the same thing we've been hearing. Gas = easy......... wood = better (maybe)
What about cost? I'm sure if you chop your own wood that is by far the cheapest but if you buy the wood compared to using gas? I know gas has gone up a lot in the last few years. If there isn't a significant cost savings or heat increase I don't see them choosing wood just because of the hassle. I really appreciate all the input so far..... |

A wood pellet stove is a easy self feeding system and the cost of the pellet is cheaper than wood.
It is worth a look.

We have a wood burning with gas ignition. We love it, very pretty and not hard at all to maintain. We store the wood outside covered with a tarp, and bring in the logs and store some next to the fireplace. Looks nice. To get a nice fire started, we simply turn on the gas, ignite it, and wait until the wood catches, then turn off the gas. Not smoky at all, the trick is to slightly open a window in that room so the airflow makes the smoke rise. Good heat throw, we are pleased.
