I grew up with manual. The manual transmission of my very first car was so old that the gear were not synchronized anymore and consequently I had to double-clutch when I up-shifted and down-shifted. Later in my late teens early 20s I raced cars and learnt how to master heel and toe. I was 35 when I first drove an automatic.

I learned to drive and took my drivers test in a 1970 Chevy Impala with "3 on the tree". I can not stand auto cars. I would have loved to have my X with a 4.8 but since you can't get the 4.8 with man trans I had to go with the 3.0. I have 43,000 on my 06 already and when I hit 100,000 I'll either swap the 3.0 for a 4.8 or turbo the 3.0.

My first car was a stick - a '69 Toyota Corolla "Sprinter." A true classic (not!) with a 4-banger 1000cc engine. But as a poor 19 year old sailor, it was the best I could do. I practically had to give it a running start and coast downhill to get up to the speed limit, but I couldn't argue with 35mpg in 1974.

Been driving standard transmission mostly ever since. Well, except for all the auto trans vehicles I've owned in between the manual trans ones. So I guess not much scares me to drive these days. Coolest one was probably the six-speed Mazda Miata I owned for awhile. I bought it as much to learn how a six-speed drives differently, as for the convertible top. (Nice, fun car to drive, btw. A screaming hassle to maintain, so I'm glad it's gone.)

Now that I'm down to only having the X5, I can focus on the driving experience. Although I do miss running the gears in a speed-shift once in awhile. Sport Mode on the X is pretty fun, though.

Dave

I tried to teach Nicole... emphasis on the word try. In her defense, it was a Saturday afternoon in a parking lot with minimal traffic. She was scurred. I want to try again, but she doesn't want to learn on Goose. She's afraid of destroying a 1 yr old clutch.

We had to special-order my wife's current X3 with a 6 MT, and wait for two months. It replaced a 325xi with a 5MT. She has owned six manual transmission cars, no automatics.

Both daughters drive manuals, one a Civic and one a Toyota. Both belong to the Facebook group "Chicks Who Drive Sticks"

Now, why are so many guys answering about themselves, and not their significant others? Or all all those posters women?

Wifey has no problems driving a manual but prefers automatic around town.
