Easterner taking long drive in California... Advice?

Hello all, need a little local information.

Going to be driving from Las Vegas to San Francisco this Friday.

Any hot spots (speed traps) or bad construction I should be aware of along I-15, I-40, I-5?

Is it reasonable to assume I can do the trip in 8 hours?

Unless you plan on speeding along I-5 which easily can be done it will take longer than 8 hours. Doing close to the speed limit with no stops is 9.5 hours and that is with no traffic in Las Vegas and entering the Bay Area.

Throw in a few bathroom breaks and lunch and you have even more time added to the trip. I've driven from San Francisco to Las Vegas and back every year for the last 8 years and my best time is 6 hours and 15 minutes. I MIGHT have pushed the BMW E39 5-Series with a 6 speed to the top speed of 155 mph for a distance on that trip. Most trips driving with traffic took about 9 hours with a break for lunch and bathroom breaks.

I was on my way to sf with some friends and my friend that was driving got 2 speeding tickets within 60 min of each other. I think driving 80-90mph crusing speed and going 100+ once in awhile in short intervals you will be safe.

I think it's 75 on 15. It's sooo hard to do the limit with NOTHING around you to gauge your speed. You're flying and feel like your standing still. Be careful, they have helicopters out there and real fast chase cars.

Have a safe trip

The 1997 E39 540/6 was just prior to the E39 M5 release and the speed limiter was set at 155 from the factory which is higher than the automatics and non M BMW's. We were just cruising along at about 100 on a desolate stretch and passed a Twin Turbo Supra Mark IV. I guess he did not like being passed by a sedan so he gunned it.

I looked over to my wife and said PLEASE! She said go for it. Not only did I catch him at about 145 mph...But I passed him at a good pace us waiving at him as we sped off. I still remember the look on his face as this 4 Door black BMW left him in the dust. Truth is 0-60 he would have killed me but the BMW was built for the autobahn.

Funny thing about this trip is we left Las Vegas at about 3 in the afternoon and we were making such good time we were getting close to home while it was still light outside. Dusk started to fall and it became a game to get home before dark without killing ourselves or getting a ticket.

Being young only comes once.

Yep...I got one of those tickets. My best to date was being pulled over by a helicopter. He pulled up along side of me waiving for me to pull over and stop.

I pulled over and about 2 minutes later up pulled a CHP officer.
