The difference between looting and finding...
Finding is grabbing what you need, no matter what the circumstances. Even if it is in a closed store. If you need it to survive, take it. Worry about what the press thinks later... Looting.. Is when it's time to get some free shit !!! Big difference. I saw mothers grabbing huggies, water, food, in my mind, all justified.. But the people grabbing "free shit" -- DVD players, watches, etc. -- inexcusable.. I feel bad that all of the "looting" captured was predominately African Americans. I am sure, no, make that positive.. That there were white folks who also did their share of looting and the majority of African Americans accused of "looting" were really taking what they needed to survive. This whole situation sucks.. I am not talking about the hurricane or even the damage, we know how bad that is, rather the increased racial walls that seem to be erecting following this tragic event. It would seem to me that this is not a black or white issue. It is a rich and poor issue. The hurricane seems to have opened up opportiunities for people to grab some shit, who might not otherwise have been able to afford it. I think it's a bad concidence this happened in a largely African American city, but I also believe it could just as easily have happened in a poor white city. Lets try to make the situation better, not worse. Lets not feed into the media who needs their next big story. Our society has come a long way, of course we have a long way to go, lets work together to get there. -- On a last note. Until I moved to Ohio for college, I never knew what racism was. I grew up in New York where everyone was either, Black, Olive, Jewish, Muslim, Asian, Irish, Italian, etc... I never knew how white this country was until I was nicknamed, "the jewish hammer" at OSU. On a final note, my suggestion is, lets all screw interracially. If were all a bunch of muts.. All these problems might just go away.. ![]() Peace. B

I don't agree with the difference between looting and finding. You went in a private place and took something that was not yours or paid for...wrong, wrong, wrong. If it's a holiday and all the stores are closed is it ok to steal things because you need them? no......same answer......prepare for the impending disaster...it didn't just sneak up on you! poor excuses for the way a society should behave...no excuse! jmo...

yes, looting is looting; however, in the snopes article the photographer of the pic that says the white people "found" the items did not physically witness that couple taking the items. the photographer of the black women witnessed that person taking the items from the grocery store. looting to survive is completely different than looting a jewelry store or taking plasma tv's. in the end, it's still looting though.

Its pretty hard to 'stock-up' on things you need when something like a hurricane destroys everything you have. Or, better yet, most people there, can't afford anything past their last paycheck. Let's say they had a month supply of diapers, water, food, etc., well, the flooding rendered most of that useless! Sure, most could have evacuated, but many didn't have cars or a way out. There were no buses to take people away, and they ended up in a terrible predictament. I'm pretty sure if you were left with nothing, you'd find things you needed to survive and protect your family. |
