Wish me luck !!
After 16 years of being a pack and 1/2 a day smoker, I have given it up. I have never tried to quit before and have always promised myself, once I quit, I will never pick up a cigarette again. Well, I've done it. Last night was my last night smoking. This morning I woke up, broke all my cigarettes that I had left and flushed them down the toilet. I put the patch on and am going to give it my 100%. No cigarattes EVER again, not a puff, not a cheat, not a nothing !! My Fiancee stopped smoking as well. We had set the date about a month ago, (Sept. 15) and here we go. I have to say the patch really helps, but man, I miss my cigs. However, I am excited to feel good again. Hopefully I haven't damaged my body too bad over the 16 years. I'm 31, so I ain't getting any younger. I figured I'd stop before some doctor tells me I have lung cancer. --

 Seriously, man, best of luck on it. How many times have I quit again? I lost count. But my grandfather was a tobacco farmer, so I can't completely turn my back on my heritage, can I? What DID you smoke? I started with Newports, moved to Camel Lights and then Camel Wides, now it's Marlboro Lights, maybe 1/4 to a half pack a day, depending on the company. Just remember how nasty ashtrays are, how ashes get all over if you smoke while driving, how your clothes smell like cigs...you'll kick it. JV

Good luck, B!! I have quit more times than I can count. I am not a heavy smoker (well, not anymore... I was); I only burn 4 or 5 cigs a day, sometimes fewer. Though surely my doctor disagrees, I can handle being a very light smoker...
By the way, the patch does help. But, if I may recommend something, go to your doctor and ask him for a light-dosage prescription of wellbutrin or something similar. It helps, trust me! Very best of luck, and hang in there! It'll be tough for a couple of days, but be strong... hang in there... it'll all be worthwhile. Juan

One of the best thing you'll ever do. I have done it a few month ago after 20 years. I did gain weight so to offset it I started running 4 times a week, and lost over 30 pounds. I didn't do the patch, but for me the first 3-4 days were the hardest by far, then it become a memory very quickly. My advice, avoid alcohol for a month or so if you can, it's very big trigger. It will be worth in the long run. It always breaks my heart to tell someone bad news re: Lung CA. Even if you don't get lung CA, COPD (Chronic bronchitis and emphysema) is very debilitating. You can't track your car with an O2 tank in your back seat...
 Congrats and be strong....Helps that your other half is also quitting. Good luck. If you do have withdrawals, make an appointment with your PMD about various medical therapies. Quote:
