$50 Million so people will kill themselves elsewhere:

http://www.ktvu.com/news/17621359/detail.html

Is it just me or does it seem a little crazy that they are going to spend $50 million dollars to build a net system on the Golden Gate Bridge. As if that's going to stop people from trying to kill themselves.

Okay, here's a thought. Jump from the Golden Gate Bridge but bring some scissors. That way if you get caught in the net, you can just cut a hole out.

But seriously, the bridge is not the reason people commit suicide, it's just a location for doing it in a grandiose manner. The people are still suicidal and are still going to kill themselves.. Their just going to find a different place to do it.

Actually it is expected that the net will bring the suicide rate on the
bridge to zero. Seems to me that if it will accomplish that then it
will be worth it....

QS,

Surely you realize that the people who might potentially kill themselves from the GGB are still going to find a way to do the deed.
The net is not going to prevent SUICIDE.. It's only going to prevent the SUICIDE from happening on the bridge.

And personally, I've unfortunately had the experience of having a friend who lost his dad to suicide. I promise you, it's better to jump off the bridge than have your children have to clean up the garage from a self inflicted GSW to the head.

And whilst I would like to think that the net will prevent suicide, it will not. It will only prevent suicide from happening on the bridge.

Just as closing a restroom to the public does not keep people from peeing. A net on a bridge will not prevent people from taking their own lives.

It is bad PR for the city to have people killing themselves in public places. Plus, it causes traffic tie-ups, etc. The city officials don't really care about stopping suicide; they need to improve the image.

Yes i know it will prevent it from happening on the bridge. That's the point.
The bridge is a magnet for suicide. So if people can be rescued from that
moment of decision and can be helped then it's a good thing not only for
the person but also for the families as well.

But hey look at it this way. This construction project of noble cause, will
create jobs and save lives. Who can argue with that logic.
If someone decides to do it later then at least the GGBD
has taken their responsibility seriously

$50 Million dollars !
$50 Million dollars !

I understand the whole PR thing. Can't they just put signs up:

Please don't kill yourself from the bridge, it causes traffic tie-ups.

Or how about instead, SF spend $20 million to upgrade their suicide hotline services...

What about other bridges in the country? Quite a few bridges in just NYC area where people jump from. Those people are not important?

And to think, this whole time, I thought California was in a huge fiscal crisis. So how do we spend our money?
Improving roads? NO
Improving infrastructure? NO
Improving schools? NO
Hiring more police? NO
Hiring more firefighters? NO
Paying city workers and contractors money they are owed? NO

Installing a net so people will kill themselves at home, in their garage, leaving a mess for their families to clean up rather than on the bridge? DING, DING, DING.....
