I don't believe that the government has any place in regulating what people eat. But they can regulate what can be advertised and what information must be disclosed.
For example, how about a regulation that bans television advertising on all foods that fit within a certain criteria. How about a further requirement that all restaurants must list certain information on the menu, such as how many calories, fat content, and cholestoral is in each menu item. Years ago they banned tabacco advertising on television, and required the surgeon general's warning on all tabacco products, and the end result is a society today where much fewer people smoke. Prohibition, and more recently the "war on drugs", have proved that you cannot tell people what they can and cannot have. But you can surely educate them about what they are eating (or drinking), and make sure they are not lied to by false advertising. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gCMzjJjuxQI http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2r4Book3JQQ

While I agree with parents having to watch and educate their children in what is good and not...I still would like to see fast foods ads reduced..

Absolutely right, but that would require people to accept responsibility for their own kids. It is alsways easier to blame someone or something else. When I was younger I was pretty well rounded. I played soccer, football and basketball, rode my bike around and played with anything R/C. However, I also played my share of video games and ate fast food ocasionally. The key was that if I played a new video game too long, my parents would throw me outside. Everything in moderation. |

moderation...? whats that?
![]() You mean I can't just let my kids eat biggie sized meals followed by chocolate cake, then let them play video games all night? But that is so much easier than being a so called "active parent"... ![]() Besides, we don't have a backyard to play in at the apartment, and bike riding is out of the question in this neighborhood... unles he don't like his bike, or wallet!

I think we really bottomed out with the invent of Easy Mac & Cheese. I mean you have got to be kidding...Easy Mac??? How hard was it to make some regular, crappy Mac and Cheese? It is all about making parenting as easy and effortless as possible these days I guess. Fast food or engineered, easy foods full of fat, sodium, preservatives, fructose corn syrup and so on followed by a few hours of TV or video games. Whatever make the parenting experience more bearable.
I think we should ban all Hooters billboards and commercials as well. I bet there are a lot of men who see these have thoughts of cheating on their wives. Maybe we can eliminate some of this infidelity if they were outlawed. If more parents would take some responsibility and stop feeding this garbage to their kids on a daily basis, then the fast food companies would have less money to advertise. Oh yeah, our health care costs may actually come down as well. Last edited by FSETH; 11-21-2008 at 12:30 AM. |
