I need help choosing a new computer - Page 2

I’ve had bad experiences with Dell as well, never owned one personally and never will. A company I worked for used Dells, every morning I would have to put and remove the laptop from the dock up to 20 times to get it to power up. How hard is it the laptop and a docking station? I had the support group look at it, Dell looked at it and they couldn’t figure it out. The following week someone else in my department got a new machine, hers did the same thing; others in the company were having the same issue. Dell was stumped. They feel cheap because they are cheap.

Why not ask you mom for a laptop and a desktop? Take the laptop to school and have the desktop at home/dorm. You could use the desktop to backup the important files from the laptop. You can run VitualPC to get windows on a Mac, just don't expect stellar performance.

That's what I was thinking.. Maybe a Windows desktop and a Mac laptop? Hmm

CJ, Dell desktops are as solid as can be. Other than a ram upgrade, our p3 733mhz desktop from 5-6years ago still runs perfectly.

I wanted a Mac but my mom said she's worried I'll have issues when I go to college with compatibility. She said she'd be willing to get me a Mac as a second computer as a birthday or Christmas present, but that she wants me to have a computer with Windows as my main computer. So, what do you guys suggest?

Get a Mac. It runs windows also. XP,2000,98,NT,. Very stable enviornment. Comes with loads of software. Yes it does Microsoft Office and is crossplatfom and network compatible. Support is in your face at all apple stores. Consumer support is wonderful. Yep I'm biased but hey it works for me and has for many years and for all those years I have never had a virus. Why should you consider a Mac? Read on. Like many before me when you get yours you will ask yourself "what took me so long"?

I'd love to switch to a Mac.. a friend of mine won an iBook last year and he loves it. He's had no problems and its battery lasts forever! I'll hopefully wind up with one of each.

Ive got a Dell Inspiron 9300 2.0 Centrino with 2gb of RAM and a 80Gb 7200 RPM Drive. I have a bunch of other stuff hanging off of it and leave it running 24 hours a day since March when they first came out. It has never had a problem and although it is warm, it is not what I would call hot.

I have using IBM thinkpads for my job for about 10 years now (yes from about when they started making them) and I must say that they are some of the most robust laptops on the market. My laptop comes with me everywhere and I travel a lot for my job, inside and outside the USA. I dropped my laptop by accident a couple of times and everytime the computer was still working. Although IBM recently sold his PCs and laptops division to Lenovo they are still built using the same quality standards. I was told that Lenovo computers will keep the IBM label for at least 5 years.

It's no secret that I am biased toward the Mac. if you don't get a Mac, however, go with a Thinkpad or a Sony Viao.

There's no reason for the great quality to change. Even when IBM owned the Thinkpad brand, Lenovo was the one who manufactured them.
