IBM T43 is the way to go.

Now own two IBMs.

I should have my new laptop tomorrow. I bought an Asus Z70Va (refresh). It's the perfect combination of power in a small form factor at a great price.

Most laptops nowadays are only made by a few different companies. Asus makes tons of laptops and they are then sold to other companies, like ABS, who throws on their own logo and resells it. You can get an Asus from lots of online resellers, either preconfigured, or in the 'whitebook' Built On Asus platform. You can add the CPU, RAM, Hard Drive, Optical Drive, Wireless Card and OS on your own, or you can buy it totally preconfigured. You get a warranty on the keyboard, screen, motherboard and chasis, which in a notebook is really all you need since you can replace virtually all of the rest by yourself.

I got my machine decked out to the nines:

2.13 ghz Pentium M
2 GBs Ram
128 mb Radeon X700 gpu
Wireless B/A/G w/ Internal Bluetooth
100 gb hd
DVD/RW

The machine tops the scales at 5.6 pounds, and it has a 15.4" screen. The case is awesome. Just read the reviews and you'll be sold too.

I am currently looking to get a new laptop. I currently have a dell from 2001. I think the quality of the current dells have gone down. The new dells just seem too frail. I am looking to get a thinkpad. Several of my friends have them and I really like them. You can get a student discount on their website.

How about if you get a thinkpad and a IMAC? I looked at getting a powerbook. However, there are several programs that I cannot run on MAC. If you run virtual pc on a mac you better have enough power and hard drive to run both. If you run virtual pc and windows XP on a mac, you can have the same problems (viruses) as running a PC.

For school, I recommend a pc.

I have always stayed with SONY VAIO range right from one of their first models in 1998. Reliable and good worldwide backup for those of us who travel frequently (can accommodate different power sources easily). Also excellent docking stations, with multible USB/s-video/quick releases. Only prob = cost. They are overpriced in my opinion, but they do kick some major booty. And they are gorgeous to look at. One disapointment for me is no backlit keypad.

Oh yes, I mean Macs are used in EVERY business all over the world ....it's just like schools using Apples. It completely puts the students at a disadvantage because VERY VERY few companies use Apples products for business use. How do you expect a kid who has only used a Mac in school to figure out Windows in the real world? Macs are nice but Apple has to rev up marketshare before it will go anywhere. I suppose you might be one of those people trying to do so

I still say the smartest thing to do is to let Apple market their OS to the PCs....THEN they will gain marketshare (and then we'll figure out OS-X is just like any other OS, its flawed).

I guess that Microsoft marketshare is what makes Windows the product everyone loves to hate. It's the same marketshare the continues to be plagued by viruses and whatever. Oh I suppose marketshare is important but i'm sure everyone will admit that what ever product you need to get the job done that's what you should use. In fact Macs are in many business not very very few as you state. The real world is the world that we all live in and what we use to accomplish our tasks has nothing to do with your reality or marketshare.

Apple dosn't have to rev up marketshare before it will go anywhere especially if going somewhare means ending up where microsoft is.
I's not about markershare. For computer users it's about ease of use and accomplishing the task at hand with out having to deal with hardware and software issues. Apples accomplishes that much better than Microsoft. Thats why Microsoft is always following Apples lead.

In the final analysis both OS have their place when it comes to getting things done and both deserve careful consideration before a decision is made. Marketshare is irrelevant.
