There is nothing the Police can say in a case like this to make people feel better, in fact many will use this as a reason to further destroy Oakland no matter what the police do. The bart police are not talking until they know what happened.. The story that is floating now is that the officer though he was shooting a tazer. far fetched for sure, but how about we wait and see what the police say.

I disagree;

Had Bart Police come forward and at least acknowledged the incident
and showed respect and humility for the family and the community
much of this could have been avoided.

As long as i have lived here i have to admit this is one of
the most unusual cases i have ever seen. I have followed
the case since it's inception and honestly the way it went down
is beyond belief.

Yes of course there is two sides to every story. And yes we
may find out more details. But for now all things considered
the whole thing speaks for itself.

That idiot cop should be tried for murder. I read that they are treating it as a criminal act, obviously... Trigger happy idiot.. Nice going. Now you've got every cop in Oakland (even the good ones that aren't idiots) watching their backs on account of your antics. Not to mention the family's grief...

What were the events that lead up to the shooting? Why were they being held?

Not that I'm suggesting their is a justification... I'm just wondering what started it all?

Seriously, we don't know both sides of the story so until we do perhaps we could stop drawing our own conclusions? Lynch Mob mentality is never good....

A fight, I'll be interested to see this victim's record.

Most of it is all in these links. Including a video of the shooting

It is difficult to see exactly what happened in that video but my guess would be a negligent discharge. There are a variety of reasons or causes for it but it could have been when the officer was re-holstering or just simply poor trigger discipline. I also read that there is speculation that it was confusion over Taser versus pistol. Who knows if that was the case here but it has happened before but that was when the Taser M19 was being used and that thing was shaped like a large Glock. The newer Tasers are the X26 and they are specifically not ergonomically or visually similar to any firearm.

It is unfortunate that these terrible incidents turn into an excuse to act like maniacs. Yes, looting and destroying other peoples' property sure makes a statement about police brutality.

Most of the people involved in the protests and riots, as far as I can tell, are not residents of East Oakland. IMO, these are professional protesters that came from Berkeley or across the Bay Bridge from SF.

As far as the shooting, this is the second time within hours that something like this happened. The other event happened in an exclusive suburb of Houston, Texas called Bellaire (if you've been to Houston it is South of the Galleria off of I-610), where a 23 year old black male was on his way home when he was pulled over in front of his house because the cops suspected his vehicle to be stolen. The cops shot the unarmed man in the back in his own driveway. Having lived in Houston for a while, it is a well known fact that when passing through Bellaire, you don't mess around.
