Thanks guys. You have to see the town in motion. The scrap yard has a magnet on a crane that loads scrap metal into a car.

The coal car dumps the coal into a bin dad made.

WOW Nice train set up, even to the detail train stop in Staten Island. The SI train station don't even look as nice as that

Looks great!

Have you or your father ever been out to Northlandz in Flemington, NJ? Not too far from SI, and I think they have the biggest layout in the country. Well worth the trip.

He certainly has reason to be proud... that's a beautiful amazing layout! Would love to see it and hear it in person. That's definitely an inspirational set for people into trains. A lot of time and heart was poured into that.

Nice looking layout your dad has. He must have spent a lot of time on it I really like the scrap iron crane - thats cool It really is a great hobby to have.

Building a layout in our basement - I knew it would be alot of 'work' and be expensive, but what caught me by surprise is just how much 'expensive' is - and it never stops I spent ~$3000 so far and I only got a small test-track and a few trains. Then ofcourse the economy went sour and everything got put on hold until I can start throwing money at it again.

To anyone wanting to have a go at building a layout here is a bit of advice:
- Start small and see if it will hold your interest. A trainset is ~$100 and a track expansion pack is usually ~$40. Should be enough to get a feel for it.
- Do a little research after you caught the bug to see what the choices are (IE. HO vs. N or O scale, what control system you want, what track to use ... etc...)
- Make sure you have alot of space. A decent looking train in HO scale (the most common size) is 1 locomotive and 5+ cars, which is easily 5 feet long - if your track is only 20 feet total it gets boring fast. I am builing mine in a 15'x25' space and it feels about right for a medium sized layout.

Edit:
This is the video that got me going with the hobby:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_yZyH9iCPHY

Its James May from Top Gear - other than being about model trains, its also got a hint of social commentary about the hobby

Hey Guinness - let me know the next time you're around. Dad gets a kick out of showing them off.

Ravenheart - post some pics! Thanks for the links, I'll have to show them to dad.
