Interesting question. I was involved in the repower of several MLW and other locomotives, and all of them had dynamic braking. However, it wasn't regerative braking (like a hybrid); the traction motors produced power under braking then that power went through resistive load banks, and was dispersed as heat. There was no recovery mechanism. I think there may be hybrid locomotives in use, as opposed to manufacturer's demos, but I've never seen one.

they could build high speed rail to connect the major cities. have the terminals outside the city and use light rail to bring them into & around the city - most of Amtrak delays are due to having to use freight lines owned by UP, CSX, BNSF, & NS, who slow Amtrak down or side rail them to prioritize their own train schedule. given the fiasco of air travel, I'd much rather go by train than plane, if they would finally stop treating Amtrak like something they hate to even think about
