H1N1---Hell yeah! I am not only going to get that vaccine, I am going to have my family get it, as well. My son has asthma, and so he meets a high-risk group criterion. I am a physician treating those patients, constantly exposed, so I will get the vaccine, too.

Why the difference in my attitude about "seaonsal flu" vs "swine flu"? Because this year, the seasonal flu seems TO BE the H1N1 version. It is more virulent, and could be very problematic. I would rather simply not get sick.
Correct me if i'm wrong Doc...but my understanding is that on average (in the US), it takes a little over a decade for a drug to move from preclinical development to the marketplace. I read somewhere recently that the vaccine ingredients have yet to be approved by the FDA...it seems to me that there's a push to blindly vaccinate the public in the face of any outbreak, regardless of the health risk of the vaccines themselves. H1N1 vaccine contains mercury (thiomersal) amongst others i'm not too comfortable with.

In NY state, there's currently a legal issue broiling between healthcare workers and medical establishments requiring that staff be vaccinated.

I have numerous friends & family members in the medical field who aren't too enthused about the vaccine either. For me personally, there's just far too much evidence of past vaccines and their ingredients that led to future health issues: H151's ingredients; Gulf War Syndrome-anthrax vaccine to name a few.

No thanks...gonna pass. Call me paranoid if you wish but nothing wrong with a healthy dose of paranoia in today's world.

Every year different flu strains are evaluated as a potential for spread in the coming flu season. It is basically an educated guess as to what dormant virus is used in the vaccination for the coming year. So every year the vaccine changes using the exact same manufacturing process. The H1N1 strain is just that...Another strain of the flu which has mutated. The common flu vaccine does not include the H1N1 vaccine which is why there are two this time around. Viruses mutate which means we are always trying to stay ahead of the process to come up with effective vaccinations.

I've already had the nasal H1N1 because I do a lot of work in Clinics and I happen to have an in with a provider group who was one of the early ones to get the first wave of H1N1 supply. I'm holding out for the injectable vaccination for my wife and son because I'm only a little hesitant to give my son the weakened live virus and so I'm opting for the injectable version which has a dead virus. My who family and as many friends I can convince are being vaccinated. I have 17 years in the Laboratory business and I have access to 100's of providers most of whom believe in vaccinations as a way to contain the spread of various viruses.

If you don't wish to take the vaccine, that's fine with me. As long as you understand the risks/benefits, you are free to make the choice. Just realize that if you get sick, you have no one to blame but yourself.

CDC: 76 Children Dead From H1N1 as Cases Continue to Rise

Friday , October 09, 2009

Health officials said Friday that 76 children have died of swine flu, including 16 new reports in the past week — more evidence the new virus is unusually dangerous in kids.

The regular flu kills between 46 and 88 children a year, according to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention data.

With swine flu cases increasing throughout most of the country, more deaths are likely, Dr. Anne Schuchat said at a press conference Friday.
She noted that 37 states now are reporting widespread swine flu cases, up from 27 a week ago. A week ago, reports suggested that cases might be leveling off and even decreasing in some areas of the country, but that did not turn out to be an enduring national trend.

"We are seeing more illness, more hospitalizations, and more deaths," said Schuchat, who heads the CDC's National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases.

Meanwhile, CDC officials say states have ordered 3.7 million doses of swine flu vaccine for a campaign that started this week. Demand is exceeding supply, at least so far, and people seeking the vaccination can start by contacting their state or local health department to find out where to go, she said.

Health officials also said more data is trickling in from several clinical trials of the new vaccine, and so far no serious side effects have been reported.

Preliminary information from one study indicates that both a seasonal flu shot and a swine flu shot are effective when given during the same doctor's office visit. However, the government is not recommending that people get the nasal spray versions of the seasonal and swine flu vaccines at the same time.

The nasal sprays contain weakened, live virus, and the government doesn't have data on how a person's immune system would react to exposure to both at the same time, said Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases.

The CDC doesn't have an exact count of all swine flu deaths and hospitalizations, but existing reports suggest the infection has caused more than 600 deaths and more than 9,000 hospitalizations since it was first identified in April.

In the voice of Sarah Palin, "you betcha"...A risk i'm willing to take. If i allowed every suspicious and potential outbreak (i.e. bird flu, sars, west nile virus etc...) to cause me to vaccinate myself and my entire family, i'd then run the potential of becoming victim to the many other cases of health issues experienced from vaccines. Who does one blame then? Ah but wait, the same companies producing the vaccines will probably develop a serum to counter any side effects right? Hmmm...

So you're willing to inject your children with a rushed "vaccine" that hasn't been properly tested? Why are so many health care workers suing to void FDA approval? Health Workers Sue to Void FDA Approval of Swine Flu Vaccine - Bloomberg.com

I guess my point is that many are losing and have lost trust in a government that try's to convince you to take a vaccine for suspicious outbreaks that pop out of nowhere or are possibly engineered in some lab, as far as i'm concerned. My memory isn't that short, especially as a New Yorker, the same bunch that said "the air in downtown Manhattan is safe to breathe...go back to work...nothing to worry about"...then when evidence is manifest that they lied and many are dying and have died from breathing the air, what do they do? They turn the other way.

To each his reach and i wish you all good health, however you choose to go about it. I for one will trust my gut feeling and long term memory of similar and past experiences.

BTW...that pic is hilarious Michelle!!!
