Hi Guys, I came across this forum today while sitting at home watching the rain thumping down spoiling my chances of doing a ride, not happy, I'm training for the French and Italian Alps this July doing alot of squats with weights and stairs for the quads, I'll need to this time round where doing three Alpe climbs per day unlike last time we did one to two, biggest problem is backing up each day, nothing like pain and fatigue is there. This is my new BMC that I'll be taking, just some specs. Mavic SYS wheels carbon spokes, FSA carbon Kwing bars, SRAM RED groupset, carbon Dura Ace pedals. Hoping for good weather again. Cheers.

Caught this thread late - but check out the following link for the toughest mountain bike race in the world. My better half has entered again, and will be competing in a few weeks time.

Absa Cape Epic | The Untamed African MTB Race

Cheers,

It seemed like time for an refresh to our ongoing cycling thread. Let's hear how everyone's riding is going this summer.

Here's my update.

Still riding the Cervelo R5. Liking the Campy Super Record 11. Upgraded the stock wheels to Zipp Firecrest 303 Carbon Clinchers, with 25c Continental 4000s tires (to match the wider aero rim). They roll very quickly, top speed is up measurably. Not bad in crosswinds at all. Braking isn't as good as with aluminum rims, even with Zipp pads.

We accumulated 2500 km of training this summer, with my wife on her R3. We were faster than last year, so our training is outpacing our aging, which is good news. We went to France two weeks ago, and did a week of supported touring around Provence with Trek Travel, riding rental Domane 5.9s with Ultegra DI2. The headtubes were a bit too high for us; the frames were otherwise good, and DI2 was great, I'm a convert. Trip support was excellent. Each day had climbing (hilltop towns, the Gorges de la Nesque, etc) The trip highlight was climbing Mont Ventoux on day 4, up the front (Bedoin ascent) and down to Malaucene. Quite a bit (meaning a lot) slower than Chris Froome did it in July. Photos attached. Epic climb, and we got the jerseys. We rode to Bedoin from Mazan, then a 22 km climb that averaged 7.5%, with four or five kilometers averaging 10%. Peak grade was 12%. It never let up for the full climb. You break out of the treeline onto a limestone moonscape at the 16 km mark or so, and you can see the weather station at the summit, but that is when it gets steep again. And hot. But we are very glad we did it.

So, who else is riding?

Hey JCL! Your two weeks in France sounds like a blast!!! I am still training and racing. Been doing a lot of mountain biking this summer and road riding. I'm glad to hear you got to enjoy some di2. You know I have had it since the original incarnation with DA 7970. I LOVE IT and definitely prefer it. For the amount of miles I put down, to not have to worry about stretched cables and shifting changing as awesome.

X's and cycling- perfect combo! About a year ago, I decided my BMC was getting a little dated so I splurged and got this BoB Pina Dogma 60.1- full campy super record group with Easton EC 90 carbon wheels... Way more bike than I'll ever be able to wring out, but it sure is sublime to ride and look at.... Can't wait for spring!

Looks good!

We're also planning our spring cycling. We start riding in February, then go to the Okanagan in early summer. This year we are heading for Spain in September, along the Costa Brava. We have all summer in Vancouver to get ready for that.
