Thinking about getting a dog... Adoption vs. Breeding??

Hey everyone, I'm thinking about getting a small dog; possibly a welsh corgi. They aren't teacup small, but are not too big for my house either. I'm up for other suggestions as well. However, I don't know if I should adopt or get a puppy from a breeder . I live in Brooklyn, NY (if that helps).

Really? From what I read, they only shed twice a year. Winter/Summer.... I would want a dog that does not shed a lot....

Was in a similar situation when i first moved to NYC...left my akita & huskie with family since they were big and had acres to rum amok. After plenty of research, i decided on a 2 month old yorkie. Wanted to train it myself and not have to deal with breaking habits that others may have created.

My sister and her husband have a Welsh Corgi and he sheds a lot -- year round! It's gross.

I think a better option would be a Glen of Imaal Terrier. Unfortunately, they are very rare =/. Any other suggestions?

You are best advised to aviod German Shepherds (Shedders) too!

There's enough 'sheddings' there to keep a family of Chihuahuas warm in the winter!

I would go for adoption. I was looking to adopt a second dog and it was just way to strict and I could not find the right match but it was only about $100 vs. the Yorkie I bought my wife that was $3800! The biggest waste of money I ever spend besides her wedding band lol... If you can find the right dog in a shelter I would def adopt!

I was thinking of a trip to North Shore Animal League, but I heard their process is ridiculously rigid.

Adopting is very admirable.. But dogs that are bred need homes too.

I would say, adopting is for the pet owner that wants a dog and is very flexible about the pet they want.

Buying a bred dog is for the owner that is very specific about what they want in a dog. They can meet the sire/dam and find out temperament, life expectations, lineage, etc.

When I was getting my dogs, I needed a dog that was hypo allergenic. I also wanted a dog that didn't shed (same thing as hypo allergenic..).. I wanted a medium sized dog that was smart and had a family temperament..

In other words, I was specific about what I wanted so my breed search started with those requirements. I was even specific about gender and coat type.

Neither is a right or wrong way to get a dog. You have to go with what speaks to you. I love pound puppies but didn't want the question of what their behavior was going to be like, their size, their health, etc.. So for me, going to a breeder was the only decision.

And don't let people who adopt dogs convince you that the only admirable thing to do is adopt a shelter dog. That might be right for them.. Doesn't mean it's right for you.

If you do decide on a breed and know what breed you want.. You can always call the breed club or go the breed website and find a referral for a reputable dog breeder near you.

The only suggestion I do strongly make is, stay away from puppy mills and mall type retail dog stores...

If you want any help, I'm happy to oblige.
