I did look, B...some were pretty good. I am the average photog's worst
critic; well, maybe not the worst, but if the focus isn't right on, and the
composition isn't pretty good, well...it's a snap shot. No biggie, as I take

edited batches of photos solve most of the viewers' wonderments.

My guess is most pics by most people, are taken on "Auto"; may be the

Buy your wife what she likes, but you might take her to a photo joint in
NYC area and have her hold the Rebel with a long lens attached. Have
her hold it to her eye, compose and hold it for about 3 mins. She might
like the 135ish max length more. Or, she may like that long lens...

Most of the shoots were taken at 30 MPH, so yes they are snaps.
The views are nothing you see on the land and some even include montains.

The standard lens is not much of a teli what do you recommend?

I knew they were shot from a moving boat. You asked my
opin, I gave it to you. I wasn't trying to be "critical"; I was
offering a critique and a couple of tips, strictly fwiw.

You should have been back in photo class in the U: by my
senior year, the criticism was insidious and near violent.

I will dig out some lens rec'ds tomorrow. I am off to beauty
rest.

No fights in a bar, photos were on the fly, still think the views were nice.

I sincerely hope you use caution. Those boats are now banned from my lake in maine after a Masshole ran his out of the water and in to a tree, decapitating two kids at a summer camp in the process, and the year before a drunk canadian ran over a kayaker.

I don't know the size of your lake, but power boats are a safe as the operator. Generally you must run at 5MPH unless you are at least 500 offshore. Its like a car some dumb drunk will screw up and kill someone but that does not mean they should ban cars.

Not an expert here - but I think the 70-300 IS lens is a good choice - remember that at the extreme end of zoom (@300) the lens will be at its worst. But you should still have plenty of range. Also its one of the few lenses I could find with that range that had IS. I liked the reviews of it so much that I ordered one from Sears.

There were some nice shots in the bunch but I agree with David on the camera settings, focus and I'll add one more which you could do easily with most free photo editing programs.

Several of the shots I needed to lean my head to match the horizon. A simple tilt would have corrected these anomalies.

Snap away though...You can't get that one great shot without taking a bunch photos.
