Jeez... a crash that killed 4 including a 13 year old girl, horrible. Very sad as well that the dealership had not taken care of the recalled floor mats on their loaner fleet as well.

I would think in that situation most would think to put it in neutral and kill the ignition, then coast to the side of the road, but no one knows the conditions before the crash.

That was horrible. I drove right past the accident site a few days later. Very very sad.

I have the all-weather mats on my Jetta and they snap in both front and back but I always make sure to snap them in after a car wash, they never seem to do it

Yeah...i'm paranoid like that. Even after i pick my vehicles from any dealer or indy, if they don't make time to consult with me on whatever was addressed i do my own walk-around before leaving.

Once picked up my X from a dealer and drove from NYC to Boston, i usually check air pressure etc...when filling up on gas and looked under the hood to discover my engine cover loose and MAF not fully connected

Very sad story. This lack of ATTENTION TO DETAIL is all too common nowadays, regardless of the brand of the dealership. Sometimes it's just a minor annoyance, like an under-inflated tire. But a tragic case like this illustrates how a seemingly small oversight leads to disaster.

As for all-weather floor mats specifically, I ALWAYS have to adjust them myself, whether it's a visit to the dealer or to a carwash.

I always use the fasteners in the floor whether it's for the carpet or rubber all-weather floor mats in both BMWs. It's the details.........

Whenever I have a loaner, I tend to be a bit obsessive/detailed about it too. Check tyre pressures (usually ends up being low), reposition the floor mats if they're there, etc....

I don't believe it would have made much of a difference. From what I read the ES has special technology to prevent transmission damage that makes it so it's a useless thing to do. The only way to shut it off is to hold down a special button for 3 seconds but who would know to do that in a loaner?
