Baseball is a great game, especially for the kids that play from a young age and build upon the lessons of sportsmanship, effort, preparation, pulling together as a team. Guys like McGuire and others provide another lesson to the younger kids. I don't think he should be allowed in professional baseball in any capacity, but that is just me.

He owes no apologies to anyone.
1. To quote Chris Rock: "You mean to tell me that all I have to do is inject that into my ass, and I'll make millions? Here 'ya go!" I break the law every day. I speed like demon, and use a radar detector. For those of you who do no speed, ask yourselves this question: IF you COULD speed and not get caught, would you do it? (Of course, you would!) 2. The question now is not who did steroids in the 80s and 90s. It's who didn't? How many pitchers off whom he hit homers were juicing? Those who've played baseball know how taxing pitching is to one's arm, elbow, shoulder, and so on... you don't think pitchers were juicing? 3. Baseball's history (and its hall of fame) is LITTERED with cheaters, criminals, and just plain bad people. And NOW, we're going to exercise a morality clause?? Let's get real... steroids did not help him hit a baseball (though admittedly, it surely helped him heal more quickly), and he belongs in the hall of fame. Juan

It turns out that McGwire did call Mrs. Maris and apologize. Good for him. It doesn't excuse what he did IMO, but at least he showed some class.
That being said, he's full of shit that the 'roids didn't help him hit more HR's, and if they didn't, according to him, why did he say that he wished that he didn't play during the 'roids era? And if it didn't help him, why did he feel the need to apologize to the Maris family?
