Some examples:

Navigation: A decent replacement for a standalone nav device. Better than paying BMW $200 for each update, has more features than the built-in nav, and often more up-to-date than the maps on the DVD.
The CEO's new Hyundai Tuck has Nav; we have a stand alone Garmin for the other cars. Nav of any version is so-so, inc. GOOG or any mapping service; I can drive to Montana tomorrow, without a map. But finding ol' Uncle Earl's ranch out on hwy 106 can't be done with any Nav situ.

Google Voice: Replaces texting from Verizon's plan for the occasional texter like me. Mostly because I object to VZW raping^h^h^h^h^h^h charging us 0.20 for each text. I don't think my 6 yr old Samsung cell has texting. I agree that text charges are the profit margin for celluar.

IMDb: When you're watching a movie and you want to know where you've seen the actor before or you're talking with friends and don't remember the movie title but remember one of the actors. For situations where you need Wikipedia or a dictionary, see the other apps I listed. All the movies I watch are at home, so the net and those sites are a few steps away.

I forgot a couple of others I use:

SkyDroid: A $3 golf course GPS app comparable to a standalone SkyCaddie device. It lets you create the courses online with Google Maps if they don't already exist in the database, no annual fee for access. Not as accurate as my Leupold GX-4 laser rangefinder but it'll work in a pinch and only uses about 1/3 of the battery for a round. I hear you, but a web "look" gives me an idea of a new-to-me track, and my handy Bushnell rangefinder does the rest, except for my swing.

Kindle: Syncs with my Kindle device so that I can read on the Droid X when I want. (I only do this occasionally) I read 30+ books a year, and 3-4 papers a day, plus a dozen periodicals, all in hand. If I was still woikin and travelling, I would have had a Kindle from day 1.
