Bruin's goalie declines Obama visit

The Boston Bruins paid a visit to the White House to meet President Obama and their star goalie declined the opportunity for personal political reasons.

Tim Thomas says he skipped White House trip because ‘government has grown out of control’ - The Early Lead - The Washington Post

It has been a controversial move and the rabid Boston sports media in particular has sunk its teeth into it.

Thoughts?

Cindy Bowen of the Washington Post said it well (Missed opportunity)

He (Tim Thomas) “had a chance to tell the leader of the free world what he thinks it means to be an American today. Not just any American, mind you, but an Olympian, a multimillionaire, a hero in the city where he works, and a member of a championship team that has been a source of joy (and sorrow, too) to millions of Bostonians for nearly a century.

“Instead, Thomas took his pads and blocker to another end of town and issued his statement. He could have talked to the president. Instead, he mailed one in from the pizza stand. I think he missed his chance. I think he missed the point of the day. I think he mistreated teammates.”

Thomas wasn't invited, the team was. By not going, and by making an issue out of it, he looked silly, IMO

I am no Bruins fan. I dislike the current team quite a bit.

I don't disagree with Tim's views on government however I think it was a poor decision to choose to voice his political views at a team event. I think he did his team a disservice.

I despise Obama, but I agree. You either go as part of the team and stay quiet, or you get a sore back and stay home, and stay quiet. It really is not appropriate to speak out like he did, when it was a team event.

I have thought about what I would do if given the opportunity to meet Obama. I am with you and don't like him one bit but I would probably still take the opportunity to meet him. Maybe he and I can sit down over a beer.

While I basically agree with his feeling/wording on 'gov't', I would have taken the trip to the WH, and met Obama, or any of the Prezs we have had in my lifetime. How many invites does one get to the WH? Suck it up and go enjoy the experience, imo.
