Need Directions: Balt/DC/MD/DE/NJ

Making our umptyseventh trip north to NJ later this week;
I've taken about every route I can find on map/GPS: they all suck at some point of trip, usually around the Balto-695 beltway fiasco. We always hit that section around rush hour.

If we were going to North NJ, I'd go diff way(s), obviously, but we are headed to Cherry Hill, (South Joisey), for ichiban Daughter's wedding.

We've done All the obvious (and not so obvious routes), I think. Jes'wondering if anyone has local info route that gets us from I-81 North in VA/W VA over to I-95 in DE heading for south Jersey. I've sneaked in a dozen diff ways: hate to list all the diff ways, here, and that period from 3-7 pm sucks. The route probs. are getting from I-81 North to I-95 north, somewhere that makes sense. Can't afford a helicopter.

I may be howling at the moon, but any suggestion is welcome. There May Be no solution, and there really may be no route we haven't tried. Jes'wondering.
Thanks and BR,md

If you're going to northern NJ, you may want to try staying on 81, and then heading east on 78. Takes you right into the Newark area. I try to avoid the I-95/beltway mess around DC.

Just an idea...

Great if you are going to North Jersey, but he is going to Cherry Hill (just east of Philly).

The traffic is getting worse there.

Beltway sucks, I-95/NJ Turnpike sucks, etc.

The trouble with taking 78 over is that it brings you too far North in NJ.

MD - let me think a bit about a route, but my guess is that it ain't pretty any way you go

It's a b itch...we've done every way we can think of. The main prob is the time of day we usually roll into the gen. area: rush hour(s).
Therefore the BaltBeltway is often a stop go nightmare...if we waddle further north on 81, one still has traverse PA on Tpk and eventually down the Schuykill, CtrCity etc.

We usually wind our way from 81 at Winchester, east over hill and dale,
across the Potomac, up to Frederick, 70 east, BUT then there's the way fun Balt Beltway. Once past that crap, I-95 north into DE, across the twin bridges into NJ and sliding into Cherry Hill, is really tolerable after the Beltway. NEway, I was not holding out much hope and I suspect we've done about every route short of driving from subdivision to subdivision, over the 5 yrs of running back and forth. Don't drain your brain; ya'll gotta work today and make some dough! BR, David

You ever tried taking Route 15 north to 30 East? I-66 or Route 50 will cut over to 15 from I-81. I've heard of people doing that with decent results, making good time.

MD - the route you described is as good as it gets, I think. Anytime I'm coming from South to North, I figure that once I'm on the other side of DC, I'm as good as home. And bopping over to DE on your way to Cherry Hill (Oye!) is good advice.

Take that radar down in Virginia, good buddy, and keep the rubberside up.

Ten Four.

Thanks, T...I may do some "discovery" of other back routes around the BaltBWay this trip, depending upon weather, vigor, etc. That BBway is Really a fooking bear at rush hr. Makes my ol'NYC traffic look logical.
The Bird dog stays On in VA,too...discrete, but on. I usually have theCEO driving then; she's faster than I am.
Rog Oh on the 4-10! md

MD:

I don't have a map handy, but all you've listed is hard to work around. Something to maybe consider since you are going to south Jersyey is going through Annapolis, cutting over to Lewes DE, and taking the ferry over to Cape May.

Not at my desk today, so sorry can't be of more help - have a great trip!
Dan
