Are all diesels noisy ?

Lately it's just been alot of Fords I've past while at a stoplight, etc but are all diesel engines noisy ?

Been looking forward for the next vehicle being a diesel as a daily driver. That's all I care about - torque and mpg ;-)

You can't consider the crude diesel engines here. For one, they are heavy-duty, so NVH isn't too big of a concern. As far as technology and milege go, the Europeans and Honda really are good at it. Check out Honda's iCTDi, when tested, a production European Accord (Acura TSX sold here) got 92mpg with this engine and set speed records:

Mercedes Benz has it right as do most european MFG's. But once you get in the truck line the outside noise increases. I say outside because on the inside you don't hear it near as much. I use to own a Peugoet Diesel. Very old technology. Loud on the outside, very quiet on the inside. People use to ask why the engine was so loud. I would always say, it's a diesel I'm not outside so i don't hear it.

Owning a 2005 VW Golf TDI and a 1992 F250 Diesel they are nice for MPG and Torque but start a little tough in the winter and you have to worry about fuel gelling up. The TDI gets 49MPG and the 250 gets 15.

Thats what engine heaters are for. There are fuel additives for that so gelling is not a problem unless you need em for your shoes. Then you be gellin!! Hard starting was always caused by bad glow plugs. But this is 2005 all that has been solved.

I have an '05 Ford F350 with the 6.0 powerstroke diesel, and I love it almost as much as my '03 745i and '04 X5 4.4. Yes, the diesel is a little noisy, espcially since Ford went on a cost cutting spree and took out the hood insulation. I recently added the stock hood liner, and added Dynamat to the inside of the doors and the ride is much quieter, at least on the inside. As far as trucks are concerned, I'm a fan of the diesel.

I wish we could get the European diesel models over here in the US. Last September during my 2 weeks trip to France I rent a Peugeot 407 Diesel. It was amazingly pepie and fast and I got an unbelievale 61 mpg (US) average. The car was also very quiet. I also got a ride iin one of my friends's X3 diesel. It was too very quiet. The noisy, smoky and winded diesel cars are things of the past over there.

The X5 3.0 Diesel is very quite.You can hear a slight clatter of the Diesel injection at idling when cold but its still very smooth.No vibrations are felt in the interior.As soon as you drive off and accelerate it sounds like a mixture of a in-line 6 (which it is!) and a V8!

It seems like diesel has really come a long way. They're quiet, smooth, and you cannot beat the torque and mpg! It's too bad they have such a bad reputation. As soon as a BMW diesel becomes available in the US I'm going to be all over it. The diesel engine is an amazing thing, and deserves a lot of repect, especially now with what it has become. A feul efficient, powerful, and impressive motor. Go for it!
