Bmws Diesels have always been that more smoother and refined than the rest!I remember way back in 1987 when Bmw had the E30 324TD (turbo diesel)that had 115 bhp ,a 6-cylinder engine and was smooth and leader of the pack.Then came the E30 325TDS with 143 bhp which had basically the same engine but was now intercooled.Much later came the 3.0 6L with 184 bhp ,VG Turbo and Common Rail technology as found in the earlier x5 Diesels.

totally agree especially when you put the foot down sounds exactly like a mix of V8 and inline 6....love it you only notice its a diesel when you wind the windows down also looove the turbo whine

Euro diesels are smooth and economical - Wish the BMW X5 diesel was available in the USA. It would be ideal for my east coast X5.

Mine is a '02 3.0d (184hp) with steptronic gear.

It makes 27mpg with a 30% town / 50% road / 20% highway drive. I have an european way of driving (35 mph in town, 60 mph on road, 100 mph on highway) with frequent overtaking, and necessary acceleration to get in the traffic.

I realy prefer the Gas V8's sound compared to the 6 in line diesel, but gas is much more expensive than in the USA. BMW's 3.0 Diesel is not so noisy and is the only way for an X5 in europe if you ride more than 10000 miles per year and if you want to resale it...
