Voting against funding the troops

The McCain campaign keeps accusing Obama of this. Now if it were true, I might even consider voting for the guy since I am against any funding of this war. But the sad truth is that this is a big lie.

Or if you want to play McCain's game here, he too voted against funding for the troops:

Here is the vote right here:

H.R. 1591, The U.S. Troop Readiness, Veterans' Health, and Iraq Accountability Act, 2007

http://www.senate.gov/legislative/LI...n=1&vote=00126

Obama (D-IL), Yea
McCain (R-AZ), Nay

Looks like Obama voted for the funding, while McCain voted against it.

Two votes, before and after ammendments. More details from a non-partisan fact-checking site:

Quote:
The McCain campaign's "ad facts" also point to a single troop-funding bill that Obama voted against in 2007. As we've written before, Obama first voted for a version of the bill that included a timetable for withdrawal. President Bush vetoed the bill. Obama then voted against a version that did not contain withdrawal language. And for the record, McCain himself voted against the troop-funding bill when it contained withdrawal language.

These guys are going to be busy checking the claims of both campaigns as this gets closer to November, with the way the tone of the advertisements is going.

I have to agree it is pretty dumb to quote a single vote out of context and all campaigns do this regularly. McCain voted against the funding bill because it contained language for a timed withdraw which he and many others are against.

Obama voted for the measure with the withdraw language but it seems strange to me that he voted against the subsequent bill for funding without the language. I realize Obama wants a timetable but this bill was modified so it could avoid a veto like the prior bill and contained much needed funding. Obama wants to end the war but cutting off funding is not a very popular way to achieve his goal so I think he deserved some scrutiny here.

That said the McCain sound byte is not very clear and therefore wrong in my opinion.
