4.8 advice, please.

I saw a really nice, fully loaded 4.8is on BMW AUC list and in a moment of madness, decided to go for it and part-ex my 3.0i.....now I know the subject has been done to death, but which winter wheel alloys and tyre size would be your best recommendation, given that my 17" winter wheels with hardly any wer to the Vredestein Wintracs won't fit over the 4.8's brakes?

Would the OEM style 58, 74 or 99 18" wheels fit the 4.8 - are there any caveats? And is a 255/55R18 all round the best choice of tyre (if I can find any!!) I'd rather buy a set of winter wheels now, though, than wait till December

The 4.8 is a 2005 Le Mans Blue, low mileage around 27000 - will post pics after I've collected it from the dealers, its got a long list of optional extras, including the auxiliary heating with remote that the diesel owners usually delight in.....will post more about it after collection. Hope I've made a sensible choice

the new car sounds lovely
the only wheels listed for that model are style 99
RealOEM.com * BMW E53 X5 4.8is BMW light alloy wheel, spider spoke 99
I think if you post a question in the E53 forum here you will find the answer regarding other wheel style suitability .
lucky you finding a great machine with auxiliary heating .

I know of a set of those wheels for sale . I shall pm the details if you are interested .

I just couldn't resist it.....nowt wrong with the 3.0i, lovely car, but I do miss the big V8....and this one had soooo many options boxes ticked - auxiliary heating, rear seat heating, panoramic "moon" roof, 20"alloys, upgraded sound system, comms pack, side steps, exclusive nappa leather, are just a few of the main ones I can remember- oh, and a factory fitted towbar!!

I'm losing out a bit on the part ex as I only bought the 3.0i in December 09, but I really really wanted this one - low mileage around 27 000 and 2 years younger than the 3.0i, I hope to be keeping it a few years. Driving to London to collect tomorrow from Hexagon BMW, and leave my "little" 3.0i with them to find hopefully a loving new owner!!
The 4.8 just had an Inspection Service and brake fluid etc done to get the service book fully up to date and comes with BMWs full warranty which I believe gives peace of mind for all the expensive stuff that can go wrong on the big 4.8. There's even a few months tax left - BVMW leave the tax on apparently - and a new 12 month MOT, unlike Merc maindealers who only do new ones if a used car has an MOT with under a month left!

It wasn't entirely necessary, the 3.0i was perfectly nice, but hey, I guess you only live once

Looks like you’ve got a good one there…………I too bought my 4.8is from Hexagon just over a year ago – They seem to acquire all the high spec - low mileage examples.

I had a few teething problems afterwards but the BMW warranty came through on that…………….
Worth its weight in gold…….Just kept taking it in to my local dealer - All problems fixed (eventually) free of charge………Brilliant…….

Hope it goes well………Driving mine home for the first time is a memory I’ll never forget……….

Ricko, just as you said....what a blast driving it home! All I can say is WOW!!! Just arrived home from the long round trip - and you're right, sublime is the word - that V8 burble is something else!!

Hopefully post some pics in the next few days and update my sig as well. Hexagon really were pleasant to deal with in the end - very easy transaction and no quibbles about my 3.0i - it was pristine when I delivered it and a really nice car, too, but the 4.8 knocks the socks off it and the other Xes I've test driven.....

yup
anyone travelling in my 4.4i loves the sound .
as far as I know the 4.8is sounds even better .
one of my neighbours raced cars for years and when he tried my car his comment was " that`s some rip from that beast " .
nuff said .

I fitted a 360mm disc with a huge brembo caliper into a style 74 wheel to test fit and with a rough-ish alignment there is a whisker of clearance so your 356mm discs with BMW calipers should be ok .

I have no idea where this member found 18 inch style 87 but they look fantastic .
they are fitted with 265/55R18 tyres instead of the 255 width .
