I just tested it again. The key will reliably unlock or lock the car remotely, over and over. Windows and interior light also work as normal. It just won't start the car is all.
So... maybe...

When we got the RSM out of the car we couldn't identify anything wrong with it. Mounting area looked good. Rubber looked new-ish and fully plumped out.
