This happened last year to mine. Got the ribbon in the headunit off, cleaned and then re-seated. Then, I did the connectors on the TV-Module (blue and white), cleaned the pins.

They don't have to take the wheel off but the job is so much easire. Spot on with the rest of your observations, spindled, there is usually a mark on there and yes they should be able to put it back...

Plastic coloured piece? If so, VERY gently prises off, held with plastic retainers that click off and then snap back into place. A small flathead screwdriver should help, but be careful not to damage...

Works for me too - 04 facelift. No text messages but all the contacts go across. Just need to check if caller ID comes up on the screem when a call comes in.
