Unhappy Side mirrors

How's everyone doing today.2nd day as a member and i have to say that i cant stop reading. I cant believe the amount of help and information everyone here has given.
Here is my question for the day. When i bought my 03 X5 one small thing that i appreciated was the button on the drivers door that pushes out or pulls in the sideview mirrors. But for a few weeks now what happens when i push the button is that the mirrors will close but reopen right away. Anyone have any suggestions on fixing this problem? Do i need to take it in for repair? Thanks.

this has been a reported problem. i do not recall the exact problem, but if you're still under warranty, go to the dealer the info is hidden somewhere in this forum, so be patient searching for it. if i come upon it, i'll quickly post it for you

E61Silver is an unknown quantity at this point
My guess is that they are not closing all the way.

Try cleaning them and spraying a little lube on them.

I have the SAME exact problem -the dealer is looking into it for me.
I want them folded in-in the garage because its parked VERY close to the GT3 and I dont want them to hit each other.

I just got this problem solved. What happened is when the mirrors are in their normal position and for whatever reason are forced open or closed it throws of the calibration. In my case another car clipped me in the parking lot, however the dealer just replaced both of my mirrors under warranty and they work perfectly now. I love BMW. lol
Good luck.

What I would like to know is how to remove the trim and the back part of the mirror properly???

Hi Guys,

Apologies for not being a big poster on this forum, I'm from the UK X5 forum which is currently broke

You need to get to the microswitch. It's a common fault of the metal lever mechanism on it rubbing free from the plastic holding piece, silly design. The X5drivers.co.uk forum is going to be up soon (we all hope) and I did a write up with pics there.

Best description I can give you is:

1. Get body coloured plastic piece off
2. You'll see a plastic casing next to the motor (but behind the mirror). This slides out and holds your microswitch and the offending lever in place
3. The lever moves down when the mirror is in motion pushing on the sensor - this tells it what position it is in. Your lever is not in place properly and so the push button actuation is not happening correctly, so the mirror springs back out.
4. Be CAREFUL when pulling the plastic housing for the switch out, the metal lever is small and may fall out.
5. The fix is to use a hot gluegun to place it back over the worn away plastic raised locating bit.

Wish I had the other site up - you would be able to see. We have had 3-4 weeks without the site now and it should be back real soon. If you have the patience, keep checking and then do a search for 'sanj' as the author and 'retro fit mirrors' (I think) to get the whole write-up. On that note, hope our original mods get the data back!

Good luck.

Thanks Sanj! Just a few questions

1. Plastic piece. Does this just pry off with screwdriver? Drivers side?
2. Am i gluing the lever back or the microswitch?

Any help is much appreciated!

Plastic coloured piece? If so, VERY gently prises off, held with plastic retainers that click off and then snap back into place. A small flathead screwdriver should help, but be careful not to damage the paint finish and start on the outer most vertical edge.

The lever needs to be glued back to form that pivot action. You'll see it's obvious once you get it out.

http://www.xoutpost.com/bmw-sav-foru...s-problem.html

had this problem, fixed it using that link's info.
basically pull off the painted portion of the mirror using these instructions http://www.xoutpost.com/attachments/...g?d=1172692777

then one you get the mirror trim off, follow the cables around til you find the switch, slide the switch out from its hiding spot. the switch should have a flat metal peice with a U shape at the end of it, kinda like a little dipper. make the U portion of the metal hinge thing less of a U and there you go. put back together half way and test it first.

i did only my driver's side and it fixed the problem.
