+1. The same thing happened to my 840Ci. The crash module was on it's last leg. Replaced it and problem never came up again.

A weak battery can also cause funny things on BMWs.

Just did mine Saturday with Amsoil Synthetic ATF (Dex/Mac III/IV). Can't believe how dark the old fluid was. I will do this again a couple of times in the course of this week.

From what I know, Pedal travel is not directly related to the pads but the hydrolics . So it could be the level of fluid, brake booster or even air in the system.

The squeal is from the pads....

Mine was last changed at 72K miles. Now changing again tomorrow at 104K miles. My experience has been around 30K miles. Not sure about the rears as I replace pads at all 4 corners at a time.

Are you sure it's coolant? Take a long cotton swab and clean out the dimples. Then you can feel the liquid to see if it is water-like (Coolant) or oil like (Hydro Fluid)
