FYI: My 2002 X5 3.0i was making whistling sound, like a turbocharged engine when accelerating. I though that was the serpentine belt or tensioner pulley. "Will deal with this later" was my plan....

chefwong - you were right, I was stupid. That was a reverse light. The problem with the actual brake light was an oxidized connection with the socket. All fixed now.

What a pain. It is not a bad bulb afterall, some wiring problem I guess. All is super tidy and clean inside led panel, does not seem to be a socket connection problem. Gotta take voltmeter now.

Yes, the piece of about 15 millimeters is inside the plate numbered #2 on the right site of the picture. The rest of the bolt is out, no means to tighten it as there is not enough thread.
