The aux heater heats air that is routed directly into the interior. I DOES NOT preheat the coolant.
On early UK delivery X5s this heater is fitted, but innactive. On all facelift X5s, it is active....

I wouldn't disagree that all the adjustments are really nice, but the raised stitching on the E70 Comfort Seat bases is not very comfortable on a long (or short for that matter) journey!

My only concern is winter use. I know that the only real answer is dedicated winter tyres for use on light snow, ice or when the tyre temperature is (typically) below 8degC....
