No heat on aux heating

Hi, just been through the manual trying to work the auxiliary heater as very cold here at present. I can set everything ok, timer and instant on etc but when I go to switch it on, where the manual says "push the HEAT button", mine only comes up with a "VENT" button. If I press this the auxiliary heater comes on, red light flashes but only cold air comes in the cabin and continues to be cold for ever.

Am I missing something? This feature may be good in the summer but I need heat now as very cold?

:xoutpost:

are you using the timer in the MID? because that's for auxiliary ventilation and not heat...

i don't recall but, don't the diesels come with a remote to operate the heat?

when you just turn off the engine, you can press the MAX on the air conditioner to operate the residual heat from the engine...

Yep, using the MID to set aux heat via timer and set via direct switch on. Manual says I should be able to do HEAT but my display just comes up VENT

No remote with my deisel, that was an expensive extra, but aux heater is there under the bonnet, and you hear it run sometimes when starting engine on very cold days.

Can do the turn-off engine thing, but thats something different, just utilising engine heat after turning off engine. I need the aux heater to come on 30 minutes before we get in the car in the morning.

Hi, I have a 2002 3.0D
I think you'll find that the aux heater was not connected fully on UK delivered X5Ds in the early years. I FORCED my dealer to contact BMW UK, who sent the dealer the details to reprogramme the software. It now works fully.
UK X5 3.0D's delived after the fuss I made, came with it all up and running. It's possible you preceded the change.

Thanks John. What you say makes sense, sounds like a software thing.

I might try my dealer but my experience with this type of thing so far is usually that the dealer has no-idea what you're talking about. I questioned my dealer before about the vibration-at-standstill problem in the stearing wheel and they knew nothing, even though there is a known fix available to them which I found on the TIS cd I bought off ebay and the hatchback door ratle fix too.

Loosen the central bolt on the 2 rubber bump stops, one either side of the tailgate inside, then turn the rubber bump stop itself 1 or 2 turns anticlockwise - this raises them about 1mm, tightnen back up the central bolt and you're done. Mine went from rattling on every bump in the road to no noise at all with just 1 turn of the bump stop but I guess some might take more.

The central bolt is one of those star socket ones which are not in every socket set, but worth getting hold of one as getting more commonplace.

Hope this helps.

Treeman,
How do you fix the vibration at standstill throught the steering wheel? I find it very annoying on my '05 diesel.
Thanks Colin.

dealer fix to vibration at standstill is to fit a rubber vibration suppressor to the steering rods, a part from a BMW Z4 so I'm told. On the TIS cd it tells dealers to do this mod under warranty only if brought to their attantion before 2004 if memory serves me correct, so after that at cost. Also TIS says not 100% cure, just decereases vibration apparantly. I asked dealer just after they were told to stop doing it under warranty, so mine not done as expensive job and not a cure - I just never stop now, just keep driving and no vibration!!!!
